Tell them how all the money they see on that board get's smashed by all there fee's and shorter than short mileage they are figured on to make the loads look sweet and how that the agents put the fuel surcharge into the rate to make the rate look acceptable. Tell them about how Landstar won't protect them when the dead head 300 miles to pick up a load that isn't there. Tell them how Landstar does not make the agents pay up the detention fee's they owe the driver. Tell them how the compliance department bugs the living chitt out of you and your Dr's for the nit picking paperwork. Tell them how rude some of the people are at Landstar when speaking with them. Tell them about how the load email notification boards are set up so that you can't put a date on them so you get 500 emails a day and your supposed to pull over or have them call your phone for each one of them. Tell them how it feels to sit in Dallas and when you see a load posted and you have the agents phone ringing in 30 seconds after the load is posted but you were beat and the load is no longer available. Tell them how it seems that decent freight is like a man throwing a steak in the midst of 100 waiting dogs. Not counting how it feels after countless times of agents calling you and telling you your load you won has been cancled and it's 11am in the morning and you have already delivered and all the meat has been thrown for the day. Tell them the whole package!!!
I'll try and address some of what you have here. There is some cheap freight, No doubt. Imo you have to pick and choose what you will or will not haul. Sometimes to get from and area that is not "good you may have to take something less desirable to "move" so to speak. Or deadhead to some other point. Usually not a ridiculous amount.
Yes there are fees,Some of which I choose not to incur, some you just have to eat. Miles are off about 10% as most other companies.Nothing new here, just figure it in.
Yep some agents do use this practice,I don't like it either. But this is something you ask about when talking to them. You kinda get to know which ones do this.(Adding in FSC to load pay).
At this point we haven't had this happen(driving to a thats not there).
Detention pay- We ask about this up front. We've never had a problem getting it.
I agree with you about the log department here.
We've never been treated rude by anyone at Landstar.
We don't use the load notify.
We have had the problem of being beat to the call on the boards,as you describe. I think the problem is some other agent is brokering it and its already gone when it gets posted by said other broker.(annoying I know).
In some areas, yes its as you say "like a hundred hungry dogs". But in this instance you look for load ahead of time,or have one set up before you leave. Not the day of.
We have had some loads cancel, but not alot. We found other loads to replace it.
I will say this, there is a practice I'm not fond of. The brokers with the Great loads. Call drivers they know and trust before putting them up.
Its not exactly fair to the newbies coming in. But life isn't fair.

This info is for my trainer he was thinking about getting his own truck and possibly leasing it on to landstar.

30% of the gross freight receipt can be advanced as soon as the agent gets your load in the computer.

Looks like I've posted to a dead issue here. As it was debated in another thread.

I know that Landstar requires HazMat, but will they hire without it?
I had it for 6 years and just dropped it in January. Looking for a carrier to lease on with and hear good things about Landstar.......minus the above opinion of course.

Nope. You gotta have it, but you are not forced to ever use it. Its a small hurdle to go thru to be leased with them. My opinion of course.

The book test is the worst. When you do orientation you have to take pretty much the same test all over again for LS's file. But that one is open book.
Where you pick your own loads you don't ever have to use it if you don't want. But they want every body to have it because they had some problems in the past where load choices were real slim and some body took a HM load without the endorsement just to get out of the area. That didn't sit too well.
