Landstar BCO's get a set rate. Approved carriers rates are basically negotiated on the per load basis with the dispatcher/driver.

im still a little confused because sometime when i call for a load they will give me bco's rate and once they find out im an approved carrier they cut the rate. im led to believe that they take off the fuel surchage for approved carriers. any truth to this?

No, they are just trying to screw you and keep more money for themself, from a load that is already so bad a BCO won't take it to begin with.

Maybe I need to give an example. See I haul a lot of freight from a landstar broker and he gives me a great rate on it. When I check on freight that other offices have is when I see the difference. He is an example. I booked a load thru a inway office for 1200 ran the load and everything was fine. Saw the load a couple of weeks later called the office for the rate they thought I was a BCO and gave me the rate of 1450. When they found out i was an o/o they dropped the rate to 850. I told them that I would be willing to accept the 850 rate if they would also included the fuel surcharge. They said that includes the fuel surcharge I said thanks for your time but you are looking for someone who needs practice driving and that is not me........It seems that no one is able to give me a straight answer about the difference in bco pay and o/o pay? Is this g14 classified like information on a walmart driver job?

cdub, the BCO rate that you've been given is rate the agent is charging the shipper. BCO's then get their contracted percentage of that rate. For me, I would get 73%. Others might get 75% of 98%, while old timers might get 80%. If I had a triaxle trailer, I'd get 74% of every load.If I added a lift axle on the truck, I'd get 75%. Since every BCO's rate can very, LS goes by the billed rate and makes the BCO figure out what they'll get. It also decptively makes the less intelligent BCO's think they are making more. When I talk about rates, depending on whom I'm talking to, I'll say rate to the truck meaning my percentage, or Landstar money, meaning gross invoiced amount.
On the 1450, without dealing with pulling a fuel surcharge percentage out of the rate, I'd make 1050 on that load. They were trying to make some money off you though. When I was an approved carrier, rarely did an agent take more than 20%, which I'd verify with a friend that was over here already.

It isn't uncommon for a BCO to quote the gross rate from the shipper when someone asks them how much the load pays. I am sure that the reason the agents quote a higher rate to the BCO's is due to them giving the owner operator the gross so he can calculate his percentage. An approved carrier gets a slightly different rate higher to the truck. At least that is the way it is supposed to work.
