I will be running out of CA and trying to average 3000 miles per week, is this possible? How hard was it for you to get to know the agents/brokers? Were they pretty fair? I have owned 2 trucks but sold them, this time I need to make it work and will be even more dedicated than before. This brings me to another question, I was thinking about picking up a 53' van along with the truck, what do you think, is this a good idea? I have pulled trailers for two years and really don't like paying that 1300-3000 per month, when you can finance a new one for that it just never made sence. I guess my qustion is, is there enough live loads with Landstar to use my own trailer, or would I be better off using thier's in order to drop and hook to preloads.

Thanks for the help,

Chuckie50

I wouldn't pay for their trailer if I could afford my own. Not at them taking 8% for their trailer.
I pulled my own flat, I can't tell you about vans.

I got paid on mondays, what ever paperwork I had turned in by wed. the week before I got paid for on monday.

Good luck with getting other O/Os to tell you their biz secrets. Every body's needs and desires are a bit different. You may be able to develop your own niche that nobody else could make work.

Hey Brickman-did you get a single check or deposit from Landstar or many payments from all the different brokers they deal with? Also much problem with differences with what you were told by broker and what showed up in bank?
Thanks

Landstar does direct deposit to your ComCard. You can then direct deposit to your bank account or write a ComCheck.

Occasionally there would be discrepancies between stated pay and actual pay. I never saw a big amount. When questioned on it there was always an excuse. Several times there was more pay than stated.

The only thing I know is that maybe the final agreement wasn't so final. Beats me. The nice thing with being a lease O/O with them you don't have to fax confirmation sheets back and forth. The down side is that your dealings with the agents is all verbal and becomes a "he said, she said" if there are problems.

As as lease O/O you only talk to Landstar agents, not what ever broker they deal with.

As as lease O/O you only talk to Landstar agents, not what ever broker they deal with.

Get yourself a Printer/Scanner/Copier. (HP All in one is about $79.00)

You can scan all your loads paperwork using a downloaded version of Transflo to your laptop if you have the scanner.

You can also print out from online, Logs, Fuel envelopes, Coversheets and also scan your logs to Landstar and or e-mail them.

Then get yourself E-Fax or Rapid Fax. (About $16.00 or less per month)

Then only take loads where the Agent will fax you the Landstar Confirmation sheet with the break down for the line haul, fuel surcharge and accessorial fees, (Like Tarp, Stop pay)

Also when you call on a load from Landstaronline you can do a print screen of the load details.

I also record all my phone conversations. (Bit much but it works for me)

99% of the time that I have a problem and call customer service, it swings my way.

These are all legal contracts, (Posted load details, Confirmation sheets and verbal agreements.

I have found that there are allot of great honest landstar agents out there.

That said, the reality is that I have found about 60% of the other agents to be dishonest and willing to do anything to cheat you out of your rightfully earned monies.

You can make good money here but you have to lookout for yourselves. Landstar will take the side of any agent that makes them money before they take one driver’s side. (Unless you have proof)

Its just good business.

Allot of the agent’s double broker the loads to himself or herself. They are the Agent and Broker and many times they are two brokers in the same office.

As much as they cut the loads you can still make good money by saving your diesel and cashing it in at the end of each trip. Make sure the agent gives you what rate Landstar has stated for the week. It changes every week. When it goes up some of the agents try to give you the lower rate form the previous week.
A call to landstar can sometimes clear that up quickly.

I’ve found that allot of the landstar drivers call Landstar the best of the worst.

In other words they let you keep more money from way better freight than most other companies, therefore you have money to pay your bills and replace your worn tires and what not.

It works but it’s not fool proof. You still have to be very vigilant and do the work. If not you won’t last long.

Talk to as many Landstar drivers as you can and listen to the solutions that worked for them and see if when you hit that same type of problem that their solution may work for you also. Maybe not.

After all, everyone’s as different as the truck that they drive.

Be safe and I hope it helps

It’s just my opinion, which I’m not sure even I’m entitled to. (LOL)

If you like to have someone else plan everything for you, to tell you where to run and when to run, to schedule YOUR home time and tell you how long you get to stay there, then do not go to Landstar. On the other hand, if you don't mind putting the time in to make your business a success, then you might want to check Landstar out. They will give you a lot of support but they will not hold your hand. But you will have the freedom to make your own choices on what loads you run and on when and for how long you go home. I really enjoy the freedom I feel here and would not think about going anywhere else.

Hey Brickman, can you edit my post on this page,

I put the landstar website in my post. I cannot edit to delete it.

I have since copied the info and added some more info in another link in the Leasing to Landstar post and got an infraction from Lilbit.

If you could edit my post and remove the Dead Link, I would appreciate it.

I didn’t mean to be obtuse.

I have since reread the Forum rules and have learned my lesson.
