I look at expenses like this: If I am taxed on the re-imbursement, I get to keep 70% of that money. If I get to claim a deduction, then I am only saving about 30% in taxes of that same money that GOT SPENT, so I am OUT the above 70%. Don't spend money JUST to have a tax deduction. Hmmm. Keep $7, or keep $3.

(Sorry if this got pointed out earlier, still working my way through the thread <chuckle> )

I agree. I've been preachin the same thing for years. Never buy anything solely for a tax deduction, you buy it because you need it (or even just want it).

I was leased to Landstar back in 2008. . . not the best of times to give 'em a try. I now own three trucks all leased to a Texas company in the oil fields. They've done well until recently. I'm considering putting one of them (with a driver on it) on at Landstar. He has extensive heavy haul / oversize experience. I can help him look for loads some, but I'm driving local runs most days myself. Any advice?

It takes time to find good paying loads when you are an owner. Some of the best loads are gone as quickly as they hit the Landstar loadboard. Unless you have your own trailer, you will need to either rent one from Landstar or an outside source, or pull one of their vans. Some fleet owners do well with Landstar. It takes time to make good contacts. It usually takes longer to lease on with Landstar than most other carriers. You might check with Universal Am Can. They bought out Pacer a few years ago and they had a strong western presence. I have a friend who is doing well with them. Universal recently changed their name, but I don't recall the new name. I believe they did it under their Mason Dixon subsidiary.

I have a question about the e-logs. lets say you took a weekend off, and wanted to drive your truck down t the beach, for personal reasons. do you have to log that? since your not doing any trucking busness?

They want you to use off duty time which is 2 hours, but honestly speaking if you call them just let them know what the deal is, just sign out of your Qualcomm and probably all is well. They don't own the truck as well once you lease it on so I wouldn't see it being a problem, although it's a pain in the rear to even go through all that
