Can anyone give me some input on them? Good or bad, it all helps. I've got 3-4 years of flatbed/step/double drop experience. Just looking for a good company to sign on with when I'm back from afghan. Of course O/O.

    Thank you,
    Kris

Thank you for your service. Yes, Landstar is a good company. They are good for flats but I think they have better loads for steps, at least that's what I was told. Your experience should qualify you to work for them. Their pay for flats is around 75 percent. However, Mercer is another good company to check out. I have heard nothing bad about them. They pay a bit higher and are suited more for flats. A final company I know of is longhaul trucking in Minnesota. They pay well and drivers are happy. I can give you a contact information to a current driver who is with them for 11 plus years.

The reason I like landstar is because of the flexibility. From what I understand from a driver is that you can in a way plan your week and area you want to run for home time, money, etc. I like that flexibility and independence. I hear mercer has a pretty low safety rating, or did, and landstar has the prepass program which rules. I'm not sure how I feel about long haul yet because they haul a lot for Ryerson...which I don't like because they are one of the worst steel plants to haul for, but I guess if the money is right and the work is good, anywhere can be a good job.

I understand that. Landstar is good because you set up your week and loads. You can make money there. The reason I bought up the other two was for options or comparisons. Long haul is a good company but I don't know if you pick the loads. Their drivers are happy and making money. In Mercer, I am pretty sure you pick your loads. Landstar has a lot of perks because it is big and has many customers. Landstar has zero tolerance for unsafe drivers. Mercer, I thought they cared about safety. Any one of these should be good.

mercer does just fine on the safety rating, we have pre-pass and bestpaas for tolls available, I get green light 90 per cent of the time, if ga would turn on the prepass, it would be quite a bit higher.

overall you will have less deductions at mercer than landstar, bobtail only 20.00, no occupational ins or workers comp required for the 0/0,

we also can book loads ahead, and if ya aren't that experienced in booking and picking your own loads you have the help of a coordinator at mercer. they also pay within a few hours of scanning in paperwork.

they pay 75 per cent, and they don't rent trailers, they do a lease purchase, I just paid mine off in November.

And at mercer you can stay at home all month if you want to and your money owed comes out of your next check as a percentage they won't take your entire check.

And this is why I posted, that's awesome info. I've never looked into mercer cause I've heard the opposite of that. Sounds like I'm going to have to start looking at them. I like the lease purchase. Renting seemed pretty dumb on the business end. Do they have any truck requirements or purchase discount programs for straps, tarps, etc?

I'd like to check into long haul just cause they're locally owned. The advertising on their trucks is a little odd, but in the end it's all a business.

The people at longhaul are nice and helpful. I talked with them a while back and they were very helpful. They pay up to 90 percent. I can get you into touch with a current o/o for them. He is a nice guy and tell it as it is.

I don't have the ability to phone people at the moment due to this third world country stuff, but that would be awesome.
