So I am in the market for a new step. My last one was a Doonan low step 50' 6". It had dual air and electric hook ups, full set if can locks, all led lights, sliding back axle to make Cali. Legal and it was all steel and wood floor. I loved that trailer. However, while the low deck made it easier to get on and off the trailer it didn't really get me more loads and in fact made it difficult if not impossible to load things like three humvees because the step up to the upper deck deck was a lot bigger than a regular step. Plus if I did get a hummer up there I usually had to throw my tarps in front of the wheels kinda like a ramp so that the hummer could get up there. Once there the bottom of the hummer wouldn't have enough clearance and would bang on the steel deck of the step. Kinda like parking a hummer on top of a triangle. Anyway I was thinking maybe a 3 axle regular step might fit the bill. Anyone got the pros and con? Also the 17.5 tires on the low step where a #####. They would wear ok but when it came time to replace them the truckstop or speedco people would hate your guts because they are a ##### to get on and off the rim. They could be hard to find too.
New Stepdeck 3 axle? Or regular 2 axle?

I would go with a 2 axle sliding spread. You only gain like 2k over a spread but you also add weight with that third axle so it is a toss up if you win or lose. I like the ability to close them up when light, empty or backing. Easier on the tires that way.

I was thinking that a tridem would open you up to be able to do some oversize overweight loads.
-
I haven't done much oversize in a while but I buy the heavy weight plate every year so that I can go over 80,000 and I was thinking maybe a triaxle would allow me to use that capability. But if there isn't much market for a 3 axle step because those type things would load on a double drop then maybe 3 axle don't help much?

I was hauling Delta II rocket years ago and with it's special trailer I would weigh about 95,000 which is why I was buying the heavy plate

I think this guy is selling his. I follow him on Youtube. He wants to get into RGNs. He's a LS driver. -
If youre leased to LS , you should have access to some really good freight and rates.
Im independent, sometimes I wish I was leased to LS but heres my take on it.
pros- when and if a low pro 3 axle is needed , you should get really good money. I pull a 48 and am currently looking for a 53
cons- heavy trailer, tires are hard to find and when you do find them on the road , be ready to pay a lot of money for tires. ( I carry 2 spares ), not a lot of fun to get under the trailer and work on it .
Im sure theres more but that's what comes to my head right now. -
I buy all tires through Landstar national acct. prices. But yeah I here ya on the weight of trailer. That's what I am trying to find out is if there are enough opportunities where a 3 axle would come in handy to justify the extra weight and cost.
-
Can't you ask landstar agents or dm? Im sure there is. Again I'm independent and I get the work, I'm sure Landstar has it. Let me know what u find out ?

Now you are getting into the whole divisible and non divisible load thing. Some states allow more weight with a divisible load and others do not. Maybe a spread with a center lift?
