Im new to driving in general (company driver now) but am doing some research for the future if I decide to go the OO route....

What exactly is the FSC? is that like LS paying a certain amount of your gas or something like that?

FSC= fuel surcharge. Changes weekly depending on DOE fuel index. This is industry standard.

It all depends...on many factors. It's kinda like religion...everyone understands the basic concept but there are many schools of thought on how to get there.

When I ran a small private fleet we started with one major customer that provided a fuel surcharge worksheet as part of the bid package. It showed thier standard for both $/mile and % of revenue for FSC. Almost all FSC are based on this: https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/ and most people update it weekly. the DOE index updates every Monday. After awhile we did much less business with that customer but had since begun using the same formula to translate the DOE info so we just stuck with it.

But being leased to LS I don't worry too much about it anymore. They have thier FSC and update weekly. The exception to the standard FSC is direct customers that have published thier own FSC to LS as part of the agreement they have.

alright I was looking at ups' website on it looked around about 4-6%, so if this was LS, I would pay for the gas and they would reimburse me what the FSC ended up being? im not quite clear on how the concept in general works in relation to being the driver.

edit: nevermind I finally found a website that explained it better. But I am curious at what a driver would end up paying for gas, in general, with diesel being around $2 bucks a gallon right now.

Well let's assume that right now we are at $0.19 per mile FSC. So let's say you were to book a load that has $1000 total on it for 450 miles. Of that $1000, $85.50 will be the FSC, paid at 100% to the truck. Assuming we are only talking about the tractor pay the remaining $914.50 would be paid at 65%, or $594.43. So you would get a total of $679.93.

Of course there is more to this, and other things to add in, such as if you have your own trailer or other accessorial charges. You would book a load, and if you choose, you could take an advance to cover your upfront expenses like fuel. Any amount of the load pay remaining will be paid out on your scheduled settlement, less any other things you pay like insurance, permits, etc.
