Thanks for the replies. The forced dispatch at random times day or night from my company and the fact a guy who went to my trucking school who is very lazy and barely passed the class is making $12k per month now is what is making me want to set my own schedule in a fast truck.

Just my two cents here.... i would buy an older pre emmission truck, 2002 and older. You can find a decent truck with a rebuilt motor and trans. The newer trucks will put you out of business..... as for what damutt said he is right. Buy your self a starter truck, and work yourself into a better truck. Notice i said better not newer

Hmmmm, me thinks that you're not ready for this if that's your reasoning. Fast truck= bigger fuel costs. Faster you go, more you're putting out of pocket. And sure, you can "set your own schedule", but you've got a truck payment to make. That means running like a dog. Especially to pay for that new truck. And his truck is making $12,000 a month. He's not. You've got a lot to learn before you start even thinking about being an O/O

Yes I do have a lot to learn which is why I am asking. My previous career I went through the same thing with people telling me that I am clueless and new but 16 years later they praised my knowledge of the industry I was involved in so this is just another life cycle methinks. I am not afraid of hard work I am afraid of those in charge who can control my fate is my biggest concern.

It's a bit more than that.

    1. Do you have any cash in the bank? At least a few thousand? Because you might want to have a maintenance account, stuff happens. Tires, hoses, etc.

    2. Do you have another couple of thousand for a down payment?

    3. Is your credit ok? A credit card comes in handy, especially with a decent spending limit.

    4. Do you have any mechanical knowledge? Can you at least fix basic things and be able to troubleshoot others?

    5. Are you married? Because if you're not, you're about to be. Got kids? If not, you're about to have one.

    1. I currently have $12,000 but will save up more. I had more money but put it into paying off my house.
    2. I will once I save up more
    3. I have an 815 credit score and $100,000 in available credit on my card
    4. Not that good with mechanics but i can learn to do what is needed.
    5. I was married once and never again will I be. Thanks.

And he's likely spending $11K of that in fuel, payments, insurance, fees....

He just bought a new house and car and taking a lot of days off so he seems to be doing fine. He was broke as a company driver.
