I'm not leased onto Landstar but I do sign up for load alerts. I'm curious. Is this the same money that's paid to a BCO when I get these. Here is an example.

The following Landstar load is available that meets your subscription criteria:

    Origin: GIRARD, OHIO
    Destination: FORT WORTH, TEXAS
    Pickup Date: 03/19/2015
    Carrier Pay: $ 2,300.00
    Miles: 1223
    Rate Per Mile: $ 1.88
    Weight: 44500 lbs
    Size: L 0'0" W 0'0" H 0'0"

When Landstar gives a BCO the rate, it is the gross rate. The BCO will need to calculate his cut of the rate in order to find what he will make on the load. If a BCO is power only using Landstar's trailers, most are paid 65% plus fsc. Outside carriers are supposed to be paid 80% of the rate and that usually includes the fsc. According to one person with whom I spoke with Landstar, the outside carrier usually receives about 5% more than the BCO. I have been told that at least in some cases the BCO makes more than the outside carrier.

That load above was listed on ITS for $2,450 and both the load and the alert showed up at the same time.

Saw many, many loads like that on dry van side.
Usually 100$ to 200$ more on ITS.

And agents always ask if BCO or approved carrier in first question, BEFORE they give a rate.
Wonder myself if is really 2 or one board for everybody.
I saw BCO board once and seems much more info and "live" than broker one.

    Another trick they use:
some loads coming in alerts never show up on broker board,
and some from the broker board (very rare but saw few) newer show up as alert.

I like getting the load alerts for loads that don't move. It keeps going up and up and up

Unless you have access to the actual paperwork from the shipper, you really have no way to know for sure whether the agent is being truthful with you or not. One thing with some agents is that they have their own logistics or brokerages that the run loads through before giving them to the company, such as Landstar. That takes another bite out of the rate before the outside carrier sees it.

I am new to Landstar getting tractor plates and insurance through them. If I buy a trailer will I have to pay cargo etc. insurance plus (?) and is this the more profitable way to go vs using their trailers? Thanks

I guess my point in this post was I thought the BCO got more then the independent carrier. This is what all BCO's have told me but I'm finding it's not true.

I had one agent not honor the load alert price because I was an approved carrier and not a bco. She offered to pay me half the alert rate, I countered with twice the alert rate and she hung up...

But I was in a ###### outbound market so I'm sure I wasn't the first call...
