From what I understand, "Landstar" as a company is made up of a bunch of freight brokers, and you (the drivers) to deliver said freight.
So it's different than a company with a bunch of company trucks like say.. TMC that can afford to take cuts. Brokers are paid based on a percentage of the freight, so obviously they're going to go after higher paid freight as well, which in turn gives the drivers that higher paying per mile rate.
Companies with company trucks dont really care about that. Their brokers are more considered 'customer service' who are paid a certain amount on an hourly basis, not based on any type of commission, the drivers? They make the same as well.. So there is a few differences there. Everyone is competing at cut-throat levels because of the lack of freight out there right now, due to a slow economy. I can only pray it'll get better because i've been trolling these boards for years now waiting on the 'right time' to buy my own truck.. Not sure i'm quite there yet, though.
I would want to do flatbed as well, and that seems to be the slowest going around right now.. I don't know if i could deal with pulling a box, and i don't have the experience to try pulling a low-boy/stepdeck.. I'm sure i could figure it out, but try telling the insurance companies that =)

so...
So i've just read all i could find on landstar. it is amazing to me that the opinion of all has seemed to change so drastically in the last six months or so. I am in the process of buying my first truck and leasing it to ls.
My questions are these:
Can a determined person with little interest in home time and a 2000/month truck payment make it with ls?
If not LS then who? It doesn't seem like there are any other companies that offer the same kind of benefits.
Is it advisable to form an LLC when I plan to lease to LS?
Thanks for any info people.
