I80 ... Winter. Get through that first. Then see if you still even want to be a driver, much less running a business.

How is it that nobody seems to get this? 1500 a week is nigh unto impossible for a company driver. Even at 40 cpm (which is above many fleets' salary caps) you'd have to run 3,750 miles. Kind of hard to do with a 65mph speed limiter and eobr device watching your hours. Don't you think?

If ownwership is an option, then of course take it. If not, then you may have to choose between the lesser of two evils..... until it becomes an option (presumably because you've managed to accumulate some $$$)

That is true. I've seen some really bad new trucks get assigned to other company drivers. I was thinking I was sure glad I didn't own a truck like that.

I'd rather get one that's been broken in, so I can know what I'm getting.

Yes. Owning is definitely better. Even an old beater. Just.... not....always....POSSIBLE!!

If we're going to entertain fairy tale solutions, then why don't I just buy a unicorn and hook that up to my trailer? Then I wouldn't even need diesel. I could just buy hay.

One possibility I've seriously considered is leasing a truck directly, then running for an owner operator company. Do you think that might work out better?

Still need a down payment though (which will cut into the savings reserve, or require a bigger reserve to get started.)

I drove for Prime from 1990 to 1998. I completed 3 leases there (one full and two partial) and didn't buy any of the trucks at lease end. I saved all my maintenance money and purchased my own truck and leased it to another company. Prime is a good place to start, if you have experience as a truck driver and have a good business since their lease could be an option. Yes its more expensive leasing than buying your own out right, but if you do not have est credit or bad credit this is an option and if it doesn't work out its a walk away lease.

The lease worked for me for the main reason I'm not one of those drivers who say I won't go here or there and refuse loads and sit in a truck stop crying about there is no freight, I always kept moving. I didn't spend a lot time at home either as all the fixed payments come every week whether you're working or not and going in the hole is a terrible place to be and very hard to get out of. So if you're willing to stay out and run your tail off then its a good fit. I imagine its harder now with the electronic logs and them governing the trucks to 65 mph now. When I was there we could get trucks cranked up after being with company for some time and we ran paper logs.
Any problems I ever had were resolved by Success Leasing (Fred Egee) or if need be by Mr. Lowe himself.

I would "NOT" recommend any lease purchase to any new drivers. You need experience to own an operate your own truck its alot more than just driving it.

I80 west of Denver in the middle of a white out. AC blowing on high when it's 20° outside tells you how I was doing with it :biggrin_2556:

If Prime has a load paying $4 a mile.. do you think they'll give it to you and let you keep 72% of it or give that load to one of their company drivers in training making 30 something CPM???

    take a guess

I don't have to guess... as empty trucks hit the top of the local dispatch queue for wherever they're at the best load available at that moment is given to the truck at the top of the queue. That's modified by the need to assign team trucks or lease trucks that are faster than company solos. Also, longer lower-paying loads are reserved for company guys since their pay is based on miles.
