It's been exposed on this forum that they hire CDL school newbs. Obviously they are pawning off their old co. trucks to L/P suc-, ahem, prospects. You'd be getting truck abused by trainees.

Get a job as a percentage paid driver. Then you know what the income is and when the truck needs work you are the one to take it to the shop and give the bill to your boss so you know the expense.

Then decide if you want to be the one to act as a money conduit from customer to vendor.

Leasing a truck just to experiment in business is ridiculous. It is a half-hearted commitment.
Buy a truck and just do it or forget about it. It's not hard. It's just trucking, wrenching and math.

Have you checked PGT's CSA scores?:biggrin_25513:

Call me dumb but i have been looking at PGT lease program for a week or so it is by far the driver friendliest i have come across. Also that post is outdated you can get a 2009 with them now which for 250 a week isnt that bad. Id would much prefer a loan from a bank to get my own truck but i have not one clue about the O/O side of trucking and would like my hand held the first time i have a go at it. I have called over 30 companies about there lease program and PGT was the only one who knew about there own program. There lease drivers billed on average 3200 a week last month and have over a 80% lease success rate. I dont know anyone else who even cares enough to know this info to tell you when you call. I only know the numbers because i was on the phone with them yesterday.

Hey semi, All the big companies now are hiring CDL newbs. And lets be honest, any fleet truck is going to be used and abused no matter how well the driver takes care of it. Fleet maint. is not always the best, you know this.
Some guys that want to get a truck may not always be able to run down to a dealer throw a few thousand bucks on the desk and walk out with the keys. Many that are new to this industry is because of job shortages/ returning vets ( aka Newbs) like my self or kids that grew up in this industry and are now 21 yrs old that are able to run with the big companies to gain experience. And that is the kicker for everyone. Now I am sure you have seen alot in your 28 yrs of driving, but you also had to start somewhere. And with the new FMCSA #### we are all dealing with and the Federal laws that are in place, No one can just go and test for their CDL and start driving for a company. They are required to have some experience from a credited school.

As far as PGT's scores are concerned they are surely in the tank, and the worst of the scores are log book violations and OOS log book violations. Those are all a result of the I/C ( independent contractors) who are still running paper logs and falsifying the books. All the company drivers are all on E-logs to help mitigate this. I am a I/C with PGT and do not fudge my books because that is jeopardizing my career. Also look at the # of truck PGT has compared to the # of truck our competition has, that also plays apart in the scoring.

Now that I am done with my rant, all I am trying to get across here is that no large company is ever going to be perfect in any aspect to any driver. I do respect your experience and insight, just please keep in mind what we have to go through to get into the industry these days let alone trying to get good valuable experience.

Grossing $3200/wk? Wow, thats low. You might make $750-800 take home.

Since I started this post I feel that it is only right to tell what my experience at pgt has been like. First the trucks. They are not leasing 09 prostars. They are leasing the 07 9400. Nothing special. Just a cheap starter truck. It has a Cummins motor in with 10 speed Eaton Fuller transmission. The trucks are governor at 70 mph and has only a sit in sleeper. My empty weight full of fuel is about 28500. So great for the loads that pay by the hundred weight. The trucks have a full 30 day warranty on it. My truck had 558,076 miles on it and was an 07. They fixed everything that I found on it without problems at all. I know a lot of people would try to get off as cheap as possible to save the companies money but the guy fixed my truck no hassle at all. I run my truck at 62 mile an hour and I am averaging around 7.3 mpg. All of my equipment cost me $1228. I bought as much used stuff as possible to cut down on the cost. They take that out in 10 payments. My expenses for the first 2 weeks was no more than $200 total. No trailer rental for 4 weeks. Oh sorry forgot to tell you the truck payments. I am buying mine for $37,000 with a weekly payment of $237. With interest I will pay $43,000. My total weekly deductions are $835 and my equipment is paid for. After escrow hits $2500 deductions will drop by $62.50 a week. So now with the safety scores. We are over in 2 categories. Unsafe driving score is 71 with a threshold of 65. Also hours of service score is 68.8 with threshold of 65. So score is not great but not bad at all. I very rarely get red light on my prepass. Oh which cost $12 a month. Now the pay. I can't say if other people average $3200 gross or not but I do not. In fact I would quit in a split second. I have had one bad week since I have been here. That week I bought home $750. That hurt my feelings bad. Even with that check my average take home here is around $2000 a week. Of course I got to take uncle sams cut out of that. That is completely legal while running on elogs. I go home when I want and I am completely in control of how I run. So you are the one that determines your pay. I hate sitting and I don't pull cheap freight no more than I have to. If they have nothing to offer I can find my own freight no problem. So I know I said I wanted to get my feet wet then get my own truck but not sure now. The trucks I seen at the dealerships are about $45000 for a truck with 600k miles on it. So as long as I keep making the money I want and my truck gets 7.3 mpg. I will keep this truck. Well as long as something major don't break. A complete walk away lease. And until I pay it off it is still their truck. I do know this is not the way other people get started but oh well. We are all different. So I hope this helps anyone looking for information.

Yes. They are nice. I checked them out while on the yard. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that it is a condo. But a lot more storage places. I talked to a guy that has one and he says he is getting good fuel mileage though. I have no idea what he considers good though.
