I know that here we can't bag on grammar and spelling. When I read some of the "my lease failed cause xxxxx company screwed me" threads it makes me wonder about comprehension. Did that guy understand his lease? Did he do the math?
I'm not saying you have to have a college degree to run a business, but I don't feel you can blindly run through this business and expect to do well.

Rooster, I have some questions just trying to get a idea, this is my plan in a nutshell, within the next 2 years I'd like to have enough money saved to put a down payment on my own truck and trailer. The company I'm with my bring home is between 9-1500 weekly. They have a lease purchase deal and a lease deal, just like your doing... Renting a truck. And I'd have NO problem doing that IF I make more than a company driver and I'm also not dealing with some of the headaches that come along with leasing to own. I have to get the exact numbers from my company and see how the 2 are different. They pay me % of the load, if I was lease to own I get 84% of the haul(reefer) we use load boards and a few brokers but the loads are always there so making money isn't a issue. My questions... Renting a truck like you are doing.. Are you getting a less % then you would if you were leasing to own? Do you pay for fuel? (You may have covered that I'm just making sure) and are your truck payments different from what you would be paying if you were leasing to own?
Obviosuly you you don't pay for any breakdowns, and I'm looking to do anything I can to get my nest egg larger. I'm extremely motivated and responsible with my money. I have very little in the way of bills, no car payment, no house, no kids, only a cell phone and some expenses while I'm at home (with my girlfriend) I guess that's a bill aswell lol. Anyways good luck with your adventure your deal sounds good and the important part is YOUR MAKING MONEY & enjoying what your doing! Good luck and stay safe out hereGoGetta07 and Rooster1291979 Thank this. -
$6600 is no doubt my biggest week and I would agree with your classification of it being a "fluke." I have had 3 checks in excess of $4000 and many in excess of $3000. All the same I count the $6600 in my averages just as I count the $0 checks when I am at home as I am now.
If I left that week out of my averages I'm still at over $1600 per week.DarkhorseEnterprises, Natethetrucker04, dukeofearl and 1 other person Thank this. -

I will ill get a higher % at that point, but only because your pay increases after a year.
I don't know about the payments for lease vs lease purchase. I can ask around, but that's never really been a concern of mine.
I do pay for breakdowns and fuel. My truck has the remaining warranty from peterbilt, for another 200,000 miles, and I have a maintenance acct as well.
Keep in mind EVERYONE pays for breakdowns. Including company drivers. You may not pay for parts and repairs, but you pay for it with time which is very costly. My last company driver job paid $75 breakdown after the first 24 hours. Means I sat 48 hours before earning $75. I could have made much more driving, so to me the difference is the same as a payment.
I cant tell you what the right path is. I don't know you or your company. I can however tell you what steps I took in deciding to lease.
When I first starting considering a lease, not current company btw, I would call the leasing dept every week to get the FSC for that week and always checked with the fuel desk on what the OO discount was at my fuel stops. Using these numbers I would calculate my earning potential as a LO and compare that to my company check. I did this for 3 months.
In that 3 months I also experimented with shifting and road speeds for my best fuel economy. I also bought a scan gauge and really tweaked my driving habits to get the best mpg.
When I took hometime I kept the payments going. Decided how quickly I could get in the hole and more to the point how quick I could get out of the hole.
At the end of my 3 months I took my real pay stubs and my pretend pay stubs to a certified tax accountant and had him do my numbers.
My last step was to procure a copy of the lease. I read it front to back several times. Bugged my companies lease dept with questions. I made sure I understood exactly what I was getting into and how to get out of it if things went south.Jilani, Lepton1, dukeofearl and 13 others Thank this. -
Rooster, Sounds like you have figured out what will work for YOU.. I believe a lease or lease-purchase will work as long a the person is willing to sit-down and make a plan, work their numbers, and READ the contract, and understand what it is that they are signing..
Far too many jump into them and end up blaming others for THEIR failures.. I do believe that some fail due to no fault of their own, but sadly, far too many don't do their homework or just get lazy..
Bye the way, I have also seen that happen when a guy decides to buy a truck on their own thru a bank.. Seen too many start getting those nice big checks and instead of saving some of it, they go out a start buying chrome and chicken lites that have NO value on the bottom line..
Good luck on your future, and don't worry about the nay-sayers...DarkhorseEnterprises, RERM, BigBadBill and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thanks rooster, you know your #### and that's great what I may do is just keep saving as a company driver for now until I have about 20-25k in the bank, I think within 2 years that should be possible.
Did you have money saved away before you did this? And I didn't think of breakdown like that, it's a good point and makes perfect sense.Rooster1291979 Thanks this. -
dukeofearl and T_TRUCKER. Thank this.

This thread rules. I love reading the positive side of it. Given the bad weeks, you're doing well.
What do you do for home time? How often, how long? I've been considering these guys a little because I'm in Minnesota, and I wanna haul the bigger stuff...Not huge. My problem is I'm national guard, so I HAVE to be home. Also, can you do any mods to the trucks, or no? Probably a dumb question, but just asking!DarkhorseEnterprises, dukeofearl, scythe08 and 2 others Thank this.
