This seems to be one of the biggest reasons drivers fail in the lease programs. So many of the failures are from the mega-carriers leasing trucks to drivers who are still wet behind the gills. Those drivers barely know the driving aspect of trucking, not to mention anything about the business aspect of the industry.

I'm certainly not saying this applies to you.

Just out of curiosity, how does safety apply to the teeth on the grill?

Noticed by who? DOT? Most drivers don't want to be noticed by DOT.

Definately a nice looking rig. Call me a green horn or whatever but I like the idea. I'm starting my training at Swift this coming monday. Highly interested in the lease however the $610 every week is steep to me. Granted I get money from the VA every mth I dont think that a $2400 note per mth is in the budget. Wish it was an easier alternative. Are all leases through Swift that high? Do they require a payment every week or can it be done every 2 wks?

You don't know enough yet to worry about it ... get through training, get some seat time in and then you'll have better idea of what it takes or if you even want to be driver ...

    Dreamboat and JChors Thank this.

Did you not read the key to hammonds issues? If not, let me highlight it for you.

Your profile says you are a student. Do you really think you can succeed any better than hammond? He has 1 year experience on you and he is doing it the best he knows how. There are countless stories of drivers with far more experience than that who fail while trying their best in many different Lease or Lease/Purchase programs.

My f recruiter swears that the lease is the best thing in the world since sliced bread. Blah blah blah. I thought that I'd ask some questions and get a good understanding. Granted every other post on this topic was saying he's crazy fir driving for swift in the first place or getting into a lease purchase is ridiculous. Yeah I am pretty new to the entire trucking scene but I've had my fair share of experiences so I'd like to think that it wouldn't be too bad. However I will take everyone's input into account. Obviously I have time to weigh the options. Only thing I really need to learn is how many miles I'll average, common vehicle repairs, load delivery times etc.

A recruiter for a truck company is the same as a military recruiter. They will promise you the world to get to sign the papers. Take what they say with a grain of salt. Go to truck stops and talk to the drivers.

First of all the recruiter shouldn't even be talking to you about leasing ... even the lease recruiters - who only work with drivers with a minimum of 6 months - won't talk about whether leasing is better or worse than being a company driver. They will talk about potential and that's about it.

And these are all the thing you need to learn before so you'll have the knowledge to make a viable business plan.

Case in point the OP ... his issue isn't leasing with Swift or even leasing in general. His issue was and is that he doesn't know what he doesn't know and doesn't know how to go about learning how to know it ... He thinks being a trucker O/O is all about the sizzle ... it's not, it's about the mundane drudgery or learning, knowing, tracking and adjusting you numbers.

Case in point ... OP needs 1600 miles a week to break even. Now his total fixed cost might be a $100 more than mine - his first mistake, going for the fancy truck instead of going for the least cost truck that can get the job done.

Meanwhile my break even is about 900 miles almost half of his ... on only $100 less in fixed expense.

OP declared that to make his lease work he was only able to go home 3 times in 15 months for 2 or 3 days ... meanwhile I take almost 3 months off in a year.

Do I lease with a some super company? ... Nope same company as the OP. Difference is I know what I'm doing.

Leasing gets a bad rap, because so many like the OP get into it and then blame their failure on the company and everyone goes huh, huh ... that's right the company is out to screw you.

So educate yourself and prepare yourself you have a long way to go.
