Agreed.
Folks get awful defensive about their lease purchase deals, so I keep my opinion to myself most of the time on this front. I've seen the figures, I've done the math, I've looked at the tax ad/disad vantage. All I can say is it's not for me. If it makes them happy, that's great. I like happy drivers.

The other thing is what business owner doesn't deal with arranging his own benefits? That's part of being a business person and not being an employee. Accept it as part of the package, or continue being a wage-slave.

I have the fortunate/unfortunate deal of being military. I have the health insurance, 401k, all that good stuff. The problem is that I have to be home one weekend a month, then take two weeks off in the summer for annual training. Its tough to try and weigh the plus and minus of that. But with already having those things lined up for me, I can rest a little easier and still make pretty good money driving someone else's truck for a little more money.

That's why doing your own research is important. What works for one might be the worst thing in the world for another. You also need to assess your own skill set to evaluate whether you're set up to be a small business owner. Too many inexperienced drivers get all gaga over the "promises" and big income numbers the mega carriers throw around - No credit check! No down payment! We will pay you $1.50 a mile! You can earn $200,000 a year! - without having a basic understanding of profit and loss, business expenses, estimating and paying quarterly taxes, and managing cash flow in a tucking company.
Businesses fail for all sorts of reasons. Merely being able to drive a truck is a very poor starting point.Wickedfire77 and ironpony Thank this. -
If you're doing well, good job figuring it all out.
What are the terms of your lease, are you on % or flat rate and what company?
Thanks -
If I was picking my own loads as a Lease or O/O I would be factoring in the weather and NOT pick a load that's headed into an ice storm! Though as a company driver well.. I got screwed with a lot of those.
The best part of trucking for me is when I'd be listening to the XM radio and hear an ice storm warning.. and then get a load assignment headed right into the storm.
Oh happy days
