    FedEx is the worst when it comes to speeding. I was coming down the eastbound lane on Homestake Pass (speed limit is 25 for CMVs), I was doing 33 and some FedEx guy pulling doubles blew past me. He must have been doing close to 60. I swear that entire carrier is exempt from any form of speed limits. Even in the winter time they dont know how to slow down. I don't know if they are just under pressure to get stuffed moved or if they just do it cause they can. Either way, I get close to the rumble strip to give them plenty of room when I see them in the mirror

    That's not Fedex freight they govern at 65

    I don't work for FedEX but I can clear two things up. FedEx Freight is non union and non o/o and they're governed at 65. FedEx Ground is the o/o company that pushes the sets hard down the road - 62 like we run is a joke but the way Ground drivers run sets is absurd. You can't push them that hard all the time and expect nothing to happen. Doubles at 75 mph is a catastrophe waiting to happen. Physics will catch up at some point in time.

    I work for Con-way Freight but the reasons we lose our own runs are similar. Outside or sub-service carriers haul freight so cheap it costs less for the company to send a schedule with an outside carrier than it does with their own driver, truck, and trailers.

    FedEx Freight drivers I know pretty well always blamed my company for introducing outside carriers to the LTL freight industry which is pretty much correct. I will now blame them for rail - NAR is our brand new code for Atlanta Rail.

    It is what it is. So long as drivers will work for .30 there is no need to pay me .57 or FXF .60 to move two day freight from a hub. We know it's only a matter of time e hubs that you sent 12 drivers to only send two just to chase your own terminals freight. That's the death of the 90k home daily job. It will catch you and your company at some point whether you're union or non too.. It's sad..

    those "90k" jobs arent attainable to most anyone, if they are hiring theres a list of 1000 applicants and as you said yourself the carriers are sending the freight via common carrier more and more so the positions are becoming even more rare rather than growing with the economy. as the common carriers get this freight its likely to get turned into a dedicated run that a driver can do for roughly 50k and everyone saves a ton of money, everyones happy except the driver that was once making 90k. theyre also moving freight more efficiently rather than making sure that 90k driver gets home every day.

    currently i do a harley run, roughly 730 miles one way, 4 stops on one end of the trip... two round trips... twice per week..harley used to have their own drivers that made 110k'ish, now they contract with ups and ups drivers make great money too, probably similar to what you make.. in any case ups contracts with my company, a otr common carrier and i have the run... i only made 52600 total pay including per diem+gross, im not complaining because its definitely an upgrade for me because im home for roughly 68 hrs on the weekend and im sure harley and ups save money rather than using these LTL's.

    You keep thinking that man.. you're saving them money out of your own own wallet.. I'll chase my terminals city freight for 90k.. It's sad that we now have drivers proud of saving these outfits money.. The big difference I've always noticed between our drivers and outside carriers is eta which is critical to the type of operation we run and fxf runs.. you keep your 68 hours of hometime bud..

    Let's start a race to the bottom thread.. I'll take your job for 40k less and be proud of it.. I hope you know someone will undercut you and take 49k with 50 hours at home. You'll be ok with that though.. At least you will say you will till it happens.. I see it every day man..

    we use some outside carries ..they make 50-60k and live in there trucks company drivers can do 70-90+ and stay in motels...you get what you pay for ..put a low paid contractor on a critical run and 9 times out of 10 they dont get it done..cant push a 50k year contractor to run 600 miles and make 5 stops in a day...we have lost accounts because contractors have been late with time critical deliveries ,or not been properly trained and shut down manufacturing plants because of not knowing how to maintain proper tank pressure..the list goes on and on..you get what you pay for...pay a guy a good wage and he will do what needs done ..pay him chicken feed and he will do what he wants when he wants...contractors work ok on some non time sensitive runs that are no brainers but sometimes you gotta pay the price to get a quality job done...not saying this happens 100% of the time there are exceptions..occasionally you find a contractor that does a great job..and you will find that the high paid co driver does a crappy job but for the most part thats the exception...this is what Ive seen the last 14 years seeing contractors put on with company drivers...

    You're thinking of Ground. FXF is locked down at 65.

    Had a Sysco driver tell me the other day that "You guys are gonna be union in a year. All it'll take is one picket line across that driveway...!"

    My response: "If that picket line's in front of my truck, they'll either be track stars or tomato paste."

    All you youngsters out their may not know this but.. The race to the bottom started with DEREGULATION signed into law by Jimmy Carter.
    With union carriers pretty much out of the picture. Your Non- Union company's are now free to screw it down how ever they see fit. Their will always be someone out their that will cut your throat for a few cents. The shareholders thank you and your government will reward you with food stamps..

    I agree. I got offer to come to Con-Way but they wanted me on extra board. I have 8.5 years doing ltl and not going to go to extra board. I be in same situtation of sitting at home. Looking at bringing teamsters on board. What a way to stick it to them.
