I notice a lot of fedex freight drivers sitting at home not working. Even seen as few applying at my company. All I can find out is there is no work and no layoffs going on. I thought being biggest ltl they keep guys working. Anyone know anything? One of the guys i talked with yesterday said at his yard they have 6 guys at home on some days. I am like ####. No wonder he was at my company.

fedex freight is running alot of its economy freight on the rails and by purchase carriers. So less work for the drivers. And they wont lay you off, they just force your hand to quit.

I know a friend that has three trucks for Fedex Ground and he said that nationally, there's a strike looming with unions.

i have tried many times to get a union job but theyre so rare...and thats because companies cant afford the nonsense. the dedicated route im on right now i can guarantee used to be held by a union driver/union company.. i know i would like more hometime and better pay, but im glad that i have what i have and even at my measly salary of 33 cents/mile or roughly 1050/wk you would be hard pressed to get me to go along with a strike, even if it were an option.

theyre too greedy imo, these companies cant afford to pay these people near or above 6 figure salaries+ astronomical benefits for something that literally thousands of qualified people would walk thru the desert without water for(metaphorically), and for alot less. good pay for good work is one thing, but when you set the pay so high above the rest of the workforce its just bankrupting the company that you work for.

i might be wrong but in this economy i dont think theres going to be much sympathy for anyone going on strike.

I heard that they will probably go 100% o/o by 2015. that includes p&d city guys.

They all went broke driving their trucks 75mph everywhere they go. They are the fastest drivers I encounter - especially when pulling doubles.

And because they all drive too fast, and refuse to monitor their drivers, I refuse to use FedEx. I use UPS or the USPS.

I think a lot of companies that employ 50 or more company trucks, will go 100% O/O before too long...

Also, FedEx ground is all O/O's and FedEx Freight is union drivers....

    Fred-X ground is mostly O/O
    And Fred-X Freight is NON-UNION !!!!!
The reason many of Fred's freight drivers are sitting home is that the railroad is moving their long haul freight, and truck load carriers are doing the shorter stuff.
The race to the bottom continues in LTL
With the Union carriers pretty much out of the picture, the Non union companys have cut the cost of doing business with cheaper labor and benifits. And their still not happy !

Makes sense to me. I talked to a fedex freight driver today and he said same think. They are putting freight on the rails and trying to get rid of smaller terminals to point they can have hub drivers go through n get trailers.

from what i understand o/o's at fedex have a pretty good deal, i dont really see or hear complaints anywhere but the reason fedex goes o/o is because theres alot less protection for a contractors if freight dry's up, no need to lay them off...no paperwork, they just dont get anything...even less protection for employees of the contractors, although i hear contractors arent allowed to have 1099's anymore, they actually have to provide benefits and w2's for the drivers of their trucks.

seems like a good business model, they dont have to provide benefits including a pension at an ever increasing price, they can better control their costs and it allows them to better weather downturns and upturns in freight volume. and honestly, transporting via rail and sending freight thru bottom feeder otr companies saves TONS of money i bet.
