Hey everyone. I am new to this forum and just wanted to introduce myself and say that this site is great and that I have already got a lot of great info/education from it.

After 20 years of working for the same company, I am looking to possibly make a career/job change. I currently work as a bay delivery driver for a major beverage company. Like any job, there is good and bad to my job(more bad then good these days). I won't go into all the specifics as to why I want to change, but instead say that my job is very physical and I don't see myself retiring from it. In the 20 years I have been here, I have only seen one person retire form the job that I currently do. I am only 37 years old and with 25 more years of work ahead of me, I don't see a long term future with my current employer. I have 16 years of accident free work history driving bay tractor/trailers(singles and doubles) and van trailers with lift gates. I live about 30 miles from most major LTL carriers and I think I would have a good shot at getting a job with one of them based on my similar work history.

I have spent the last few months exploring other possibilities for employment and I think LTL might be a possibility for me. I was wondering if some of you LTL guys could tell me a little more about what a day in the life of a PU&D or line haul driver is like. I have read through a lot of the posts here on the LTL forum and I am looking for more specifics about your jobs like:

    Company You Work For?
    How Long Employed?
    Pension or 401K Match?
Start Times and if set or variable?
    Hours Worked a Day
    Hours Worked a Week?
    Days Off(how many and which)?
    Vacation Time Tier?
    Paid By Mile or Hourly?
OT After 8 or 40 or Other?

Currently I work first shift M-F(occasional Saturday) anywhere from 45 to 55 hours a week. I am home every night and get to have dinner and spend time with my wife and kids(ages 8 & 11). I know most of you work a lot of hours and I would like to know how many of you with families like mine(or had) have managed to balance life and work? Any other info or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Go apply. You and the Food Service folks would fit right in with LTL, Plenty of labor and Multiple Stops. Weird kinda way, We are grouped in the red headed step child of transportation. MINUS the Line Haul folks :)

    Go Apply.

Thanks for the response! I am sure there are several questions I am missing like:

    Do you love your job?
Who is the best LTL to work for?
    Who has the best equipment?
    Who pays the best?

Did I guess the right question or should I continue?:biggrin_25524:

I worked for quite a few companies... Not proud but had reasons. 3 which of which are nation wide, my current is only regional and isn't in your areA. The 3 that are nation wide are Con-Way freight, YRC Freight and UPS Freight. Con-Way is very very rough to work for, but pays well. They got a 401K plan. Also plan to spend more time on the dock on a forklift than driving a truck. Start time varies, and you can be doing city p/d or Linehaul the same week.

UPSF which is just as rough as Conway however they are union and are the highest paid LTL. however they are becoming just like com-way. But they have a pension plan and 401k. Your are hired onto either the city or Linehaul. Start times vary.

YRC however is the more laid back of them. They are union, health benefits paid for. However the pension plan is gone, and don't think they offer 401k anymore. equipments in real rough shape as well. And you get a 15% taken out of your paycheck due to the contract to help the company stay in business. As for career id say it's iffy, but it's good to learn the ropes if they take you to get experience. Line haul is all drop and hook. They also own USF Holland so give them a look too

I believe all 3 of which I mentioned give you 2 weeks vacation after a year. I was able to get some days at UPSF beforehand. YRC offers overtime after 8'hours, UPSF is after 8 and 40, CWF by me is after 8/40 but they are different is differ t regions. All 3 for local p/d is hourly, and for Linehaul is mileage. CWF By me they only wanted you to work 40 hours, very skimpy on overtime. UPSF they want you to work till you die everyday (once again by me) and YRC I averaged 48-60 by me when I peddled, and about 45-55 when I ran the road.

Do I love my current job? I wouldn't say love but it's tolerable and better than most places. Just they only want to use 48 footers in tight places, and expect you to break skids down if you don't have a lift gate. My right knee has been in pain for some time and my dr wants me to get a X-ray. Also our ancient trucks, however they are "supposedly" replacing the fleet. I loved YRC she I ran the northeast doing line-haul and still miss it. But the terminal is too far away.

best LTL to work for. They all are the same, just some are more tolerable then others. Not sure who is in your area, let me know and I and the others can tell you who we recommend.

best equipment would be Con-Way, FedEx Freight and UPSF... in that order as they are replacing the old

highest paid is UPSF. (Nation wide). Followed by Con-way as they just got a raise
