When you drive locally and are on end user delivery you are doing much much more then driving. In fact driving becomes the thing you do the least and the least amount of issues you will have on your job. Most of your job is you being the entire company for the customer and most of what you will be doing back at base will have nothing to do with driving. It will all be paper work and making sure your money is good and issues about customers and how your route is set up. Driving is the least of the job it's true.
You'll have to learn products and all that stuff. Trust me when you work at like a Sysco or GFS driving is the least of your job. Thats why if you read my it's all my fault page I talked about how to pick orders and work pallet jacks and stuff like that, because you will be doing a lot of pallet jacks and, two wheelers and even lift gates.
If you have a convertible route for all of you who don't know in beverages there is this trailer called a convertible which is essentially a dock high side loader. They are used on routes that have grocery stores and small stores kind of all mixed together, but not big enough to send an actual bulk truck out on.
However like 7UP here in Cleveland has a couple convertible routes and that's sideloader and bulk all tied into one. You want to learn the beverage business on both ends do a convertible route, you'll get it all and then some.
This is a convertible and what one looks like if you have never seen one before.
Local Delivery much more then driving

Driving down a hi-way doesn't take as much skill as doing pickup and delivery in town.

I completely agree the pedestrians alleys docks etc make it a lot more challenging for new drivers. Hence the immigrants driving pin to pin longhaul
