Had my first run at Willow Run Foods, Didn't do any driving since it was my 1st run. Had 1300 cases 12 Wendy's stops all in north jersey. Left 1am wed and got back at 6pm thurs. Would of got back earlier but I'll tell that story at the end. Anyways I have mad respect for you guys after doing my first day. I'm a young guy thats in shape and lifts weights and ##### I'm sore. Deff will take a few weeks for my body to get used to. Theres some places a 72in sleeper w/48 footer does not belong, he!! some of the stops a straight job would be tight. Felt uneasy in some areas, esp in newark and jc, not a place for a 140lb white boy. Of course all the fast food joints are in the hood and night time stops.

Heres other story. Took a kenny that ran on natural gas and for some reason my company doesn't give us gas cards b/c we have it at the yard. Well our kenny started sucking up the gas for some reason. On the way back we only had 10k in the box as a back haul and was only getting 3.8mpg. Couldn't stop anywhere and even if we could we didn't have a card. Made it to 380 about 20min south of scranton before we had to pull off and shut her down. Company sent a tow and tractor to grab the trailer. And yes this isn't the 1st time they've run out of natty gas.

Heck of a 1st day, deff question their logic

Probably because there isn't an abundance of natural gas refueling stations set up for trucks.

And if they are, they're probably not in a pay network (Comdata, FleetCard, etc.)

Yea I agree with you. It would be as simple as giving us fuel cards. Passed right by Newark Liberty where we could filled up. Something might be wrong with the truck. We didn't even 400 miles on almost a full tank. If you can get around their bs its a decent company they have great 401k and profit sharing program. Employees that are fully vested got 16% of their yearly salary put in this past year. Dispatch leaves you alone so that in its self is great

I don't much care for sleeper cabs or 48' trailers. You know and it's the reason I don't run a company like Willow Run Foods, but if it was me I would have straights and tractor trailers. The spots that are bigger and off the highway or whatever I would send the tractor trailers to and the inner city stops I would send the straights to. I would buy the big twin screw 32' straight trucks and run those. Plus that way I could tap into the Class B CDL driver market and be able to hire both kinds of drivers.

NHB Food Service here in Cleveland has run both kinds of trucks for years, Dairymens as well and same with Nestle. Nestle has some big tractor trailers, but they also have a lot of straight trucks big ones too mostly twin screws.

Anyhow that's how I would do it, if it was up to me.

yep, MBM here, same job. (just did lots of fast food places). Definately not designed for sleeper trucks and 48's. You hit a lot of curbs. Try not to do it fast and not to hit anything big and unyielding. (lots of stupid landscapers with big rocks).

Always always always check how you are going to get out of a lot before you enter. I'll just stop the truck on the street and throw flashers and get out and walk around before i enter. (or ask the store where the truck usually parks).

and backing is bad. If you can drive in so you can drive out. Sometimes you have to back but backing into a busy lot full of stupid people getting fast food is always bad.

and yeah, I'd use day cabs too. it's a real revelation when you get a day cab on a route how much easier it is. (and how much easier to back)

This is pretty much my motto if you can drive in and do a big u turn around the back of the building and drive out you are 100xs better off then clogging up the whole street and backing in from the street with every clown and there brother and sister around doing whatever they please. There were times when I worked as a beer truck driver where I went to back in and realized "no this isn't happening" to many people around being careless and crowding the truck and I said no were done and I stopped and drove forward and said thought to much at risk to make it worth it.

Threw on the four ways and ran my fair share of deliveries in from the street plenty of times.

That's the grocery warehouse ltl stuff. It's night and day compared to the normal ltl. Normal ltl road drivers normally feel guilty getting paid for what they do.

    No they don't.

Only guilt road drivers feel, Pretending to Throw in for the coffee funds sipping our brew, sitting in our break room while we collect. Cheapskates!. I was Born at night, Not last night:biggrin_2559:

EDIT TO ADD: Eat our Ice pops too. We should have a padlock on the freezer door. Cheapskates :biggrin_25516:
