I am considering a city driver or road driver position with fedex freight. I would be in the driver's apprentice program in Baltimore.
Can anyone give me expectations regarding first year salary and amount of hours available at this terminal for entry drivers with no seniority. I know I would be working the docks a lot. There seems to be a lot of full time dockworkers with seniority at this terminal. How come more dock workers are not electing to become drives here and earn a hire wage?
Any insights into this terminal would be appreciated. Thanks...

I am not familiar with FedEx, but I will say my understanding is they do not pay extremely well. As contractors for them, I've been waiting for my money four months now, which is unacceptable. I am in the Baltimore area seeking drivers to do Port work, FYI. I pay essentially .50 to .75 per mile, or so for Port runs.

I think cdiy is talking about FedEx Ground, which mainly deals with parcels and is contracted out to owner operators. Unfortunately I can't help much about FXF since I don't work for them, although my brother in law does. He runs his route and goes back out and does a few switch-outs. Working 8-10 hours a day, and doesn't hit the dock (but things like that depend on the terminal).

I was referring to the local P&D and Linehaul sections. I am not familiar with much else involving the company.

FedEx Freight pays very well. A lot of dock guys there make good money on the dock without risking their job on the street dealing with the city. Easier to get fired having incidents on the street. FedEx Freight pays one of the best but with the better pay comes more rules and a tight ran ship. I've heard of city guys topped out making 70k in the city and Linehaul making 90-100k topped out in my area. That's all I know.

Radman is correct. Pay and benefits are very good, but you're going to have to play by the Big Corporate Rules(I hear it's worse on the East Side than what we deal with). If you can roll with that, it's a fantastic job with lots of potential.

I'm in the apprentice program right now and can shed some light on that if you have any questions.
