I'm looking at a 2011 Mack CXU613, to purchase. It's got 400k miles, looks in good shape considering the mileage. MP8 engine with 455 hp ,10 speed transmission. The asking price is in the low 50's. That's 20-30% below what a Freightliner, KW, International or Volvo would go for. Is there something I don't know about Mack's or is it just priced to Sell?

I don't hear anything about the MP8, which is probably a good thing. A few comments around the forum about them getting good fuel economy if driven right. A company local to me runs 613s to pull reefers OTR, before that they ran Freightys. They have a good dealer network too.

I think the Mack MP8 engine is the Volvo D13 with very few differences, maybe someone can confirm this?

    I wouldn't doubt the MP8 and D13 share a lot of similarities.
    But some striking differences:

-MP8's are running DPF systems in combination with an EGR, the d series is running EGR and SCR only.
-MP8's are running wastegate turbos variable turbos, D13 is running sliding nozzle variable geometry.
-Depending on which MP8 you get the BHP could run anywhere from 415 to 505, whereas the d 13 runs anywhere between 375 to 500 BHP depending on how it's setup and model type as well.
-MP8 torque levels run anywhere between 1,480-1,780...D13's are running 1450-1850.

That's the major differences I could pull from the resources available. Mack is a bit more protective of it's engine data, then Volvo, it would seem. I'll link my two sources shortly after this next bit.

In summary, I'd say the biggest similarity these two engines share, is that they both go into class 8's. Volvo doesn't cross over into Mack it would seem. Have you ever seen a mack's interior? They're only now starting to get some creature comforts. They've been pretty spartan, to date...and I doubt they're changing at the behest of Volvo; more or less they're changing because the average driver want's some amenities. Though it's not really debatable that Volvo trucks have arguably the best ride under a load and an extremely nice interior. So if they're not matching interior, frame an build qualities it would stand to reason they're not gonna force an engine on one another.

THOUGH, I will say this much. Macks are good trucks. They're very good trucks. They're not the most comfortable, pretty much ever, but the build quality is spectacular in a lot of ways. Their engines are excellent. The worst you hear about the MP8 is issues with coolant, and simply by measuring the PH balance of it- you can put a lot of worry to rest. The downside is that you might confuse the interior of a mack sleeper with a prison solitary confinement cell, at times. Again; this is changing, albeit slowly.

I've mentioned Volvo makes a great interior, and again...the ride is genuinely unmatched...But, you're paying a premium for parts with them, the build quality on the frame and body at times leave something to be desired and the D13 is a spotty engine. If you ask around, you're going to find that replacing the injector cups every 500,000 miles is more than just recommended, it's almost vitally necessary. The engine, also as mentioned above, is not running a DPF system with active catalytic reduction via def spray. It's just running a large EGR with SCR technology...one only needs to look at the Maxxforce 13 or the C13/15 ACERT to learn all they need to know about EGR only/SCR technology. It's not great. It might be in the future, tough at this moment dpf with active DEF spray is the clear winner (IE: DD 13/15 and Cummins ISX.)
The D13 also has a long history of spinning out crank and cam bearings, a multitude of injector issues outside of the cups and driveline issues all the way out to the Ishift combo.

All in all, I think you'll get a better deal with the Mack. You'll get more bang for your buck and have more versatility with the driveline components. Be prepared for your back to be in a bit of pain at the end of a straight 11, though.

I drive mack vocational vehicles, I can confirm they make a great body/cab and engine in the sense that it has a long service life...it also carries a good resale value.

both motors are built in Macks Hagerstown pa plant. they are the exact same other than programming. your price looks about avg. asking price. I would see if injector cups have been replaced thats the worst part of the motor, there has been alot of up dates to cups and injectors over it. dpf pumps go out quite a bit.
