How pushy do you get when they're unloading/loading and taking their own sweet time?

On the 4th I was delivering to a plant that seemed to be running on a skeleton crew. After asking two different guys I was finally told where to park and wait for receiving clerk. I parked, which was inside the building, and walked around for 10 minutes before finally finding the right guy. He told me to drop chains and he'd setup to unload. I untarped, unchained, and got ALL my gear put away and the guy had not returned. I walked around again and no one was around.

Then the whole plant got quiet. Clearly it was break time. At this point it was 45 minutes from the time I actually talked to the clerk and nothing had happened. I was already pissy about the prior day's 30 minute break snafu. Dropping this load meant getting home. I told myself that at the top of the hour I would start blowing the air horn. Inside the building I'm quite sure it would have made an impression. I intended to hit it nonstop until I saw action.

Luckily he came shortly before my deadline (although I really just wanted to see what would happen). I said what's up? He had told me flat out that he was on break. I said, "You know what my 2 year old daughter was doing while you were on your break? She was wondering why her daddy wasn't with her at the parade this morning? Let's get this s*** off my truck!" It didn't seem to phase him.

Normally I approach every new delivery with a smile and a "How ya doing?" And usually I find if you start out nice, it usually ends up nice. But what about the not so nice? What do you do?

Your wait time was under an hour on a holiday with a skeleton crew running....if you approached me like that I am sure I coul have found some "emergenicies" that needed my attention before you got unloaded

The worst part of driving a commercial vehicle is shippers and receivers that act like you are bothering them when it is time to perform their job. The previous comment is a great example of a lazy, good for nothing, moron that we deal with all the time. There is really nothing you can do about it, unfortunately.

Wow only an hour wait on the 4th. The people there are making overtime. No rush to get the job done for them. Getting an attitude will only delay you. That is what detention pay is for.

    I feel your pain...

Unfortunately, if you start getting too aggressive with some of these places, they will unload you (eventually) then put you on a blacklist and forbid you to ever come back.

At Miller/Coors in Irwindale, CA they have have photos (posted on the wall) and names of the drivers that have been blacklisted for getting too aggressive.

Just because its a holiday it does not mean people should not do their job... Most of them are paid double on holidays and dont wanna do jack since most of the office people and supervisors are not there...

Awww...you got all that from me from one comment?...I am impressed sir!

See...I do something people like you and the OP don't do..and that is to expect to wait a reasonable amount of time before I blow my gasket. See...I understand that most of these shipper/receivers have 2 hours to get me unloaded. I don't have to like it...its jut the way it is. If he was on his lunch then there is nothing I can do. How do you know sir, that he didn't have a full schedule ahead of him after his break and had no other time to take his break. Unfortunately the world does not revolve around you and your load and its attitudes like yours andthe OP that does cause problems.

I a sorry if I offended you by saying if you came at me with that attitude, I would be less than helpful.....Lazy guy out!!!

Unfortunately, you are at the mercy of the receiver. It is something you just have to eat. You are in a no-win situation. I left a job that I liked recently because I was sick of dealing with waiting hours for the receivers to do their job. I talked to my boss repeatedly about it and he either didn't care or couldn't do anything about it.

The original post didn't claim he wanted to be unloaded the second he got there. He wasn't aggressive towards the receiver. He was professional and sought out the receiver. It wasn't until he felt he was being ignored that he became upset.

You are going to get your break either way, so why wouldn't the receiver just unload the guy and then take his break? I myself feel the same way. It is just an attitude of, "Well, I'm not in a hurry because it doesn't effect me" that is grating on the nerves. If you were a receiver and it was almost time to go home, I bet you would be in a hurry if the driver was taking his sweet time backing into a dock, wouldn't you?

So what because you had to wait for all of an hour on the 4th with a skeleton crew you are all mad? Its trucking get over it! I cannot believe why you are even calling this a slow receiver an hour? Really you're all mad about an hour? Try sitting there for 3 hours at a first come first serve waiting for the truck ahead of you to pull out and get unloaded. And durning that 3 hours having another truck get in before you when you were 2nd in line. Its trucking you're going to have to wait at times.

I suppose I have forgotten that you are better and more important than everybody else out here in this big old world that drives a truck. Tell me please what would blowing that air horn have done for you aside from pissing off everybody? What did getting all pissy with the loader get you? If you would've approached me in the are manner I would've let you AIT longer. Taken even more time. You need an attitude adjustment. Was held up yesterday at a job site ended up waiting there for 2 hours. After they got to me took less than 15 minutes to unload. Did I whine cry piss and moan nope. All I did was walk over to a loader and ask him if I was in the right spot. Said yea I have to get the rest of this taken care of and I'll get to you asap. Said no worries take your time. 2 minutes later he was pulling skids off my trailer.

Attitude goes a long way let things go. You knew what you signed up for when you started trucking remember that. If you cannot learn to deal with these sorts of issues I'd suggest finding a new career. We have all been there before I'd suggest you learn how to deal with these issues or find a new career. You have no idea what you will be in for at some of the places you will be picking up and delivering.
