    Hello all.

I've been reading up on Maverick as a potential company to drive for. I've spoke with a recruiter (forgot her name, but she was real helpful and sweet) about some issues with getting possibly hired on. I am getting my CDL A on my own as I've been around this industry a while since my father has been an OTR driver for most of my life. I'm not concerned with the lifestyle of this job (single, young, no commitments) and know pretty well what I'm looking at getting into.

The only concerns I have with getting on with an outfit like Maverick is my location. I have relatives in northeast AR and my folks are actually looking to move around the Fayetteville area in the next month or two. Right now I'm in Colorado, but if Maverick would accept an application/provide job offer I'd be willing to move back to either of the locations I just mentioned. I plan to mention this when I call again/apply, but I just wanted to see if anyone on this forum has gone through a similar situation or has any pointers for a situation like mine.

Another concern I have is about the auto shift transmissions, but seems nothing can be done about that.

Don't know about that situation, your recruiter can help there. You get used to the automatics and they are really nice to have in bad traffic, it does take some getting used to when backing but it all works out. Maverick is a great company and I wish you the best.

I did a turn through Maverick's flatbed div before they were doing dry box / reefers. They're a class act but bear an attitude, so get used to doing things "The Maverick Way". No room for half-hiney work. ComCheks were the standard then, and I ALWAYS got money when I needed it. My in-truck trainer was a heck of a guy. Even tempered and a great teacher. Classroom Guru was another story. A pissy and arrogant blowhard, know-it-all with huge holes in all his stories, but otherwise knew his Maverick standards and trucking stuff inside out and upside down. Very knowledgeable. Despite being trucking's version of Barney Fife, he's a good teacher, and there's nothing wrong with his methods, esp in a roomful of crusty drivers. All the trainers and drivers I met were very knowledgeable, professional and had been in the trenches for a long time. Good folks. As for the company itself, office and admin were understanding and professional people. Most of the higher ups have a deep trucking background and have been down the rough roads. Great bunch. Ladies in the office are, as you say, sweet and kind. Very helpful. Facilities there and other yards are always clean, safe and comfortable. Mechanics take care of business, but offer no quarter when it comes to abusing equipment, lying, cheating or stealing. EXCELLENT equipment, no frills, but good solid hardworking trucks. Checks cashed every single time. Never left me hanging with a breakdown, bad load or stuck far from home on a holiday. I'd totally work for them again, and may just. Best of luck to you. You'll get to know Petro VERY well. haha - PeaceOut

Spoke with the recruiter again the other day and got some things ironed out. He said while I could put an app in just before getting my CDL (and subsequently switch it to an AR address), the no-fuss no-foul way would be to wait until I had gotten everything settled in AR after moving so that I could receive an invite to orientation as quick as possible. I really, really would like to drive for Maverick, but the whole moving without a job lined up thing makes me nervous (though I have other options for work if necessary).

Just spooked to pull the trigger I suppose.

Nowadays it's Pilot/Flying J mostly, with a few approved Love's and TA's here and there. Also the occasional local ma-and-pop type of place.
They're also direct deposit, like clockwork... sort of. Always on Friday, but exact time varies.

Well, with trucking, there is no shortage of job options. Arkansas is a decent area for several companies if Maverick doesn't pan out.

Got my CDL on 10/6, finished my app 10/8, app accepted 10/10 and orientation day set for 10/12. Can't wait to get there and hit the ground running.

My thanks to Donnie in the recruiting department in helping me through the process. Also congrats to Donnie as I'm the last driver he set up for orientation/hiring as he is moving to the TCD Fleet Management department. I wish him the best luck and hope I get to meet him come Thursday next week.

    Ready to get rolling.

Congrats! Donnie was my recruiter as well. Listen and follow directions during orientation and you will be fine. The fact you are there is big in and of itself.
