I first want to say that I am in CDL school on my own dime. I want to work for Maverick Specialized when I graduate. I also may have the opportunity to become a boilermaker apprentice making $17hr to start with the local union. The problem with that is that it may not start untill after June if I get accepted at all. My question is how easy is it to leave Maverick on good terms. If I get done with their 6wk training and a couple of months on my own, are they going to be mad and try to blacklist me if I leave. I would give them 100% effort while I work for them and would give at least two weeks notice before I left. I just dont want to be blacklisted for any future opportunities. Also would it be possible to go back with them if the apprenticeship doesn't work out. I realize that me getting a job with them would be unlikely if I told them I am trying to get into an apprenticeship program before they hired me. That being said, I dont plan on telling them when they hire me. Getting into the apprenticeship program is not guarenteed and it is at least 4-7 months away. I would not want to loose a good job because of another opportunity that may or may not happen in the future. If Maverick works for me I might stay there instead of the apprenticeship job even if I get offered it. If anyone could share any stories about leaving maverick or going back to Maverick after quitting, it would be appreciated.

The CDL training is free for me because I went through my states WIA funding program. I just found out about the union apprenticeship program so I am torn between two jobs. If I get accepted it would not start until after June. I want a truck driving job as soon as I graduate. If it is a great job then I will keep it. If it is just ok or it sucks I will do the apprenticeship job. Will quiting after 4-5 months put a blackmark on my DAC if I give 2 weeks notice? Would Maverick hire back a driver that quit after 4-5 months?

Honestly, in my humble, newbie driver, non-experienced opinion, you wont make it. I dont think your going to want to come back if you dont like the apprenticeship, to be honest.

I was forced into driving because of a layoff from a corporate job. While I dont mind being on the road, I still miss my five year old. I drive because it's a job, a way to feed my family. I have no intention of driving for the rest of my life, as fun as it may be. If your already thinking that you'll give it up and go with the apprenticeship job if you dont like it, your going to find MANY other reasons to quit. Trust me on this. In order to make it (and no, I havent "made it" yet) in trucking, you have to get your head in the game and keep it there. Perhaps if you get early word that your not getting that apprenticeship, you'll focus more. But if your thinking about that apprenticeship while on the road with a trainer, it's going to show, and your attitude will go right into the toilet.

Why are you even bothering with school if you are already formulating ways to quit a profession before you even get started? Its really simple, just make a decision on what you want to do and do it. It doesnt make sense to me to spend thousands of dollars for school for one profession just to worry about how to quit upon getting an apprenticeship in another. If money is your main motivation, you have the potential to make far more $$ in trucking than you could by being a boilermaker. What is the cap on boilermakers? $22-24 at most? Thats only $45-49,920/yr base, before taxes and union dues. I leased a truck for 8 1/2 mo. and grossed over $113,000, and banked over $65,000 after all expenses and taxes, and didnt have to fork over my hard earned cash to a union. Do you want to call your own shots or be a union slave, that choice is up to you.
