Looking for a decent company, is May it?

First, some background. I got my class A CDL April 2011, went to work locally for a sod farm driving a B truck. After a few months of that I decided I wanted to do OTR. well I got on with a company, went through orientation and all that. well due to some personal issues I was forced to leave that after a week and come home. Went back to the sod farm, been there since. Did some flatbed work for them this past winter during our down time, pulling oversize loads of hay out of south dakota and montana. But with the work season back in full swing, it Seems like im driving a wheelbarrow more than the #### truck nowadays.

Im in a much better position now to go bacK OTR to get my 1 year in for a better job locally. Looking through all the companies on this board, May looks like the best bet for me. Denver would be my home terminal, and before I get things set in stone over there I wanted your honest opinion of May currently. I can read threads that others have posted, but that is outdated info in my opinion. Not too worried about home time, the GF now understands what needs to happen if I am gonna get a better gig locally. How are the miles? Im currently netting about $500 or less (depending on the weather sometimes MUCH less) every week where Im at now plus it is seasonal, hoping it is a bit better out there? Im willing to run as hard as I can, but definitely no doing anything illegal.

I do appreciate any and all insight you all can give me, I want to make a "good" career decision this time.

    Tony

PS I am in the process of getting all my endorsements, so if having my hazmat is a plus at May, that would be cool to know.

    May doesn't haul hazmat.

You can't run illegally there as far as hours of service go, they have EOBR's. Compliance wouldn't allow it anyways.

I believe reading the last two to four weeks worth of threads and posts should help you a lot as far as "current" happenings at May.

    Good luck!

May will micro manage the hell out of you now. They will tell you when, where and how much you can fuel. They will tell you what roads to take and will watch you on the gps of the Qualcomm.

There are guys getting miles at May, but most seem to be sitting on loads with too much time. Combine that with their charge you for over idling, can turn a good driver, although new, into a grumpy driver quickly.

They do have new equipment and maintain it well. There are exceptions, but for the most part, they do that well.

If you have over a year with a cdl, why do you want to go otr in order to get a local job? Is it because you don't have class a experience?

I currently work for May. For the most part they're decent. I have been struggling as of late to get the miles I need. They run legal ( they're on e logs), they tend to "micromanage" you. Hazmat is not needed here as they only haul small quantities of hazmat goods that do not require placards. The only one that can determine if they're right for you is you. Before settling on a company I would suggest you do research, talk to recruiters view threads in this forum, if you have the chance to talk with other drivers do that. The one thing with May is that they don't seem to have as much freight as other carriers out there, hence the lack of miles. I hope this helps you with your decision.

Thanks for the replies guys. Ive been all over TTR for the past few weeks researching. And yes from what I am seeing talking to companies around me, I dont have enough A vehicle experience. The trucks Im driving now are just ex-road tractors with stretched frames and a 20' flatbed thrown on the back. I can drive the hell out of a 10 and a 13 speed no problem, navigate around the city without directions, just give me cross streets.

From what Ive been reading, May seems to be on the downhill right now. I brought up the running legal thing due to previous company that ran paper, indirectly hinted to us through a series of "logging exercises" to run a little less than clean. Not gonna roll with that.

I will continue my search, maybe getting those endorsements will help the local search. Would love to do LTL, just not so sure on the whole "we will call you as we need you" for the first few months/years.

Thank you all for your help, that is the reason I asked you all first before a recruiter. They spout so much rainbow covered BS just to get you to choose them. I wanted the real answers.

I also heard from someone who currently works there, and someone can correct me since I'm not employed there anymore, but I was told you have to tell them where you're stopping every night now

Ive been looking, just a bunch of "now hiring O/O in your area!" and stuff that sounds like scams. Will keep an eye out though. Im really not afraid of the hard work, but Ive gotten as far up in this company as I can, and I still come home every day caked in dirt and mud. Tired of that. I saw in one of your other threads Efon that you went with Furniture Row Express, how is that? I saw an ad for them a few months back and wanted to apply but again, not enough experience!

I just quit the day, not sure if all the dm's are trying it but they switched me to a different dm who was trying to make me tell him where i am stopping. I wrote him a message on Qualcomm explaining that I plan to stay in the truck as I am not sure where I will be stopping 11 hours from now, alot of times bot even 5 hours before i stop, heck I might decide to stop after 5 hours if I choose to and if he wants to know where I am to look at where the gps says I am. This is also the dm who doesn't look at where I am or going when sending fuel stops. Did a live load call in Rogers, Arkansas on my final trip to drop in Denver and clean my truck out and he sends me a fuel stop in West Memphis, Arkansas a 700 mile round trip.
