I have a few questions about May Trucking because I am also thinking and giving serious consideration to May. Up until yesterday, it was a done deal, I was going May. I heard from a good source that May's milage has seriously dropped over the last month or so with the economic down turn. That new drivers that were getting great miles went down to 500 miles and then 200 miles in a week. Can any May drivers confirm or deny this? I talked to a Werner driver yesterday and it looks like I would be garaunteed all the miles I want with Werner and their paperless log system seems to be really good as well. Thank you.

I don't know whom your talking to at May, and I haven't spent any time at any one of the terminals in quite a while. but for whats its worth I seem to
run all of the miles that i can legaly log. could be that someones DM doesn't like them much or trust them to make their deliveries on time, that can have a negitive impact on the mileage.

although i'm still new here at May I run just as hard as I possably can and get the job done on time if possable, if not i let my DM know as soon as I relize that there is a problem and they take care of it.:biggrin_25525:
I hope this helps clairify some things for you.

    good luck wherever you land

It was from a good source who talked to the drivers in question. I was thinking about and you're probably right, but I've also heard that some companies have been doing that lately, they get a new driver run him/her for a few months and then nothing. I was trying to confirm what I was hearing. I really have had my heart set on May Trucking. Thanks for your valuable input Techman!!!

Also one thing to keep in mind is What division are they in?
there is the dry side that only runs the 11 western states and theres the Refer side that runs all 48.

I'm on the refer so my runs are typicly longer and I dont get home as much. but as the saying goes

IF THE DESIEL AINT BURNING AND WHEELS AINT TURNING, I AINT EARNING!:yes2557:

Oh trust me, I wanna keep them wheels turning. I was thinking about doing the refer side of May, as well. Though I would really like to do flatbed as well and Werner has a flatbed division. They're out Denver, don't know what division they're in. How do you like it so far? You like hauling the refers?

i can comment that i am not running as hard as i would like here lately, i am getting miles. but it does fluctuate.

i caught a nice run out of the house on tues. going to cali. i dropped in fontana sat. a.m. and still no pre-plan. hope its just this area, their is about 30 drivers here waiting for loads this weekend.

They will run you better on the refer side then the dry side and if you don't need to go home, then thats a plus also. But their focus switched to training drivers rather then retaining drivers and they do not have the freight base to run you hard and then get you home on a consistent basis IMO for any sustained period.

I worked on the dry side and most of my loads where paper or some kind of lumber product. Miles where not a issue with me. But what I had to do to get those miles and their shoddy equipment ( trailers) was.

If you do decide to work for May you will be hard pressed to find many veteran drivers working for them anymore. They pay good for a trainee but once you get 6mo's to a year in they will starve you out to replace you with another trainee. Thats how the training mills work.

There are no guarantees of miles in this industry. I know a couple of Werner drivers, and the miles go to the trainers first. The paperless log system does have some advantages, but you don't get to fudge a few minutes here or there on that system. My hubby drove for them, and he was lucky to break 2,000 miles a week.

I'm still trying to decide, I start Monday for school. I have 3 weeks to decide. Both sound wonderful. I have heard little negative about May and I wanna go with them, but I still feel if I went with Werner it would be better for me in the long run. I don't wanna work for a month and then get left somewhere. Ya know? I also understand the whole mileage thing with the Industry.
