Is Melton really as bad as everyone says?

I have always considered Melton and they "seem" like a decent company. I love their trucks and the fact that they are a flatbed carrier. I would like to give them a shot but it is a h*ll of a gamble for a company that is based 2000 miles from where I live. I have a few questions for who ever can answer them?

    1. Do they do any on the road training?
    2. What is their operating area?
    3. Do they utilize EZ or PrePass?
    4. Do they hold orientation at their Youngstown Ohio yard? if not how do they get a person to orientation in Tulsa?
    5. What loads did they purchase the 53 foot trailers for?
    6. Are they good about getting you home for home time?

I'd sure appreciate the come back.:biggrin_25525:

    I talked to a Melton driver and to answer your questions, according to him;
    1) nope,,they do a few days of orientation and your off...there is a manual you carry with you
    2) all 48
    3)yes
4)he said it was somewhere else
    5)didn't say
6)nope...LOL he stated that they arent' the type to get you home for weekends, but getting you home is normal.

I think Maverick is a better company for pay and home time. I talk with a lot more happy Mavericks than Meltons.

Maverick has gone to an all automatic fleet. No more standard tranny's there.

I don't know how much Maverick pays but Melton's pay is pretty good. Not a lot of flatbed companies are paying $40 to tarp. Maverick does win over Melton's hometime though. Even though you can go home with Melton every 2 weeks, you'll be losing a lot of money doing that since they tend to give you the 900+ mi. loads for the weekend.

Any one know if Melton offers any regional driving positions or are they strictly 48 OTR?

I've only been with them a few short months, but...

    1. Do they do any on the road training? no, you have a 4 day orientation where you learn tarping/securing. I would have liked a little more time, but its really something you learn while doing it, and seeing as most shippers rarely load like they have on the training trailers...lol

    2. What is their operating area?48. Stay mainly to the east of 35 though, but they do have loads out west.

    3. Do they utilize EZ or PrePass? They have EZPass. Ask for a form for PrePass, fill it out, and that is $16 a month or so.

    4. Do they hold orientation at their Youngstown Ohio yard? if not how do they get a person to orientation in Tulsa? yep.

    5. What loads did they purchase the 53 foot trailers for?flat bed loads. :D From what I've heard, they bought them specifically for one thing, but don't have that anymore, and now just use them for everything. Doesn't really matter I don't think, since its really no different from a 48 except you have 4 extra feet on the tail....

    6. Are they good about getting you home for home time?I've never had any trouble. I've only gone home twice since starting, but both times I was home when I requested. First time I was heading home from CT on the first load after I put in my request, second time I was home 2 days early. Not really anything to go by, but I've yet to be disappointed.

As far as I know, the only regional is Texas. Now, with me living in Texas, that's the only thing I know about, but I haven't heard of any NE regionals...

Noggin I got a few more questions. Does Melton pay you orientation pay? Whats their idle policy? Detention and layover pay? I'm getting ready to make a change. Getting the feeling that the company I'm with is gonna pull an Arrow Truck lines on us really soon and need a Plan B. Melton and Boyd are the 2 I'm looking at. ...TMC..well nah..their too anal in their policies.
