Greetings all. I'm starting orientation with Melton next Monday. I'll be over in the Oklahoma terminal. Trucking plays strange tricks on a man's mind. When I was out for months at a time all I wanted was to get back home. Now that I'm home all I want is to get back on the road. My feelings towards trucking mimic an addiction I guess. I didn't realize that until I was home for about a week or two. I started out flatbed and it's good to get back into it. Drop and hook is fine, but it's also nice to see what you're hauling.

I've been at this game for about 6 months now. I've still got a lot to learn. If you guys could give me some tips on managing finances among other things I'd be much obliged. I recently bought a laptop and I'm thinking I'll need to get as many bills on automatic withdrawal as possible. Right now I've got my mail going to my folk's house, but that arrangement may not last. Maybe a P.O. box? So many things to think about ... Any advice is welcome.

Well, I hope Melton turns out to be the place everybody says it is. If it is I'll probably be there for the long haul. The orientation process at Swift needs improvement. Every class about half are sent home the first 2 days because of paper work. It happened to me and from what I've seen it happens pretty much every class. I'll probably call the orientation people over at the terminal to ensure that it doesn't happen again. The recruiters have been awesome so far, but it's nice to hear it from the folks who will send me packing if I've been misinformed.

Anyway, I'll post when I can. From what I hear they'll keep us plenty busy. I've opted to drive rather than take the bus. That's another lesson I learned from Swift. I'll keep you guys posted, cheers.

    My tip would be:
If that is you in the picture on your post...remove it. Reason: You may say something that Melton does not like (yes...company representatives monitor this site), and they will know EXACTALLY who said it. You will get canned, and wonder why you were.

Sup, Ray. Where do you live at, close to Tulsa?

As far as bills and mail, if you have no one at home to check your mailbox, then a po box would be smart. Just let em know it may be several weeks or so between you checking out. Most bills allow you paperless statements, so that could cut down on things sent to you.

As far as being sent home, as long as everything you told recruiting about your experience, how long you have driven, how long you've been out, criminal history, accidents and tickets and such, you have nothing to worry about. People get sent home because things come up they didn't mention. Or health, they can't pass the physical. Don't bother calling orientation, they won't be any help. Compliance is who cuts people and the only way to contact them is by snail mail, and you won't get a response before Monday lol

    Any other questions, lemme know.

Good tip for most companies, but i don't think that would be a problem. We recently had a guy write on Meltons fb page some things about his dm... mainly venting frustrations. .. and they just removed the comments and asked what they could do to help make him happier.

I'm sure if you get pretty bad into defamation something might happen, but TTR has pretty good mods that would probably remove the posts from here if they were that bad.

Besides, picture or not, I'm guessing Ray T is his name so he's pretty m much known anyways lol

White Dog, interesting point. If I experience problems I'll get them resolved. I'm not one to fuss over quibbles. No job is perfect. If there was one we'd all be doing it. Most of the ranting I hear about truck companies could be resolved if the driver had communicated through the proper channels. 1970 is not my birth date.

I'm over in Colorado. Yea, I'll have to get pretty savvy with the laptop I guess. Anyway, I think I'm good on the points you mentioned. I guess we'll get assigned a truck at the end of orientation. I'm wondering if they'll let me drive back to the Denver terminal to drop off my car and get into my new truck there. Otherwise all that driving will cut into my home time. Any advice on what to bring and not to bring to orientation?

Yeah...we do not have a terminal in Denver. Farthest west is Tulsa. So I suggest taking them up on the bus or the air fare reimbursement (up to 150 I believe), or your car will be sitting in the Tulsa yard waiting for you...

What to bring...You will more than likely be going with a road trainer for at least a couple days, maybe not. I'm not sure, it varies case to case....but bring bare essentials. Clothes for a week or so, a couple shirts for working in. Bring some form of entertainment--laptop, word finds, etc. Hard hat, steel toe boots, safety vest, gloves will be available for purchase at orientation if you don't already have them, but you will need them. Basically travel light, in case you do go with a trainer, since there will not be much room in his truck. If you don't, they will get you home as soon as possible for you to get your other things.
