My husband is an owner operator and he is considering leasing on to Mercer. We heard that they are a good company but we would like to hear from any o/o that works for them and can tell us the inside scoop such as their percentage pay, what region does the majority of their loads go, how is their load board, brokers, etc. Any info. would be appreciated.

Mercer

Yes I too own my own tractor and am considering leasing them onto Mercer possibly. I want to try to get some information on them as well but haven't seen much on this forum. I think one of the staff members mentioned to me the other day that they are a good company! I just can't remember who because I am still learning the ropes on the forum!

Mercer is a lot smaller company than say Landstar.

I've heard complaints about their dispatching system. Even tho they are a O/O company they have dispatchers unlike LS that allows you to pick your own loads.

Also they have first in, first out.... if you refuse a load for what ever reason you go to the bottom of the list of trucks in your area.

I talked to one of the Mercer VP's at the GATS show in DLS and asked him about that and he said you can knock off anytime you want and not lose your place. So I don't know what the true story is. Do know they don't have many or any complaints on here which is for sure a rare thing. I guess their system works for some and not for others. Also must not try to bust your DAC if you decide to get out. That would for sure be griped about if they made a practice out of it.

Worked there for a year. They are first in first out. If you turn down a load you do get to keep your place. They were great people. They have freight most everywhere. Out west it did slow down and get cheap coming back east but that is normal. They encourage you to come into louisville. Anytime you get through at lunch just let your dispatcher know and they take you out to eat free.

An agent can play favorites and get around dispatch. If there is an agent you have a good relationship with they can give you loads ahead of drivers above you on the board.

I have no real complaints about them. They may be slow now as it is that time of year and economy is not the greatest. I may go back someday. The people in the office were some of the best people I have ever dealt with. They will help you out any way they can.

I am with Mercer and yes it is first in first out and you do not lose your place. If you take a few days off you even move upon the board so you are first when you are ready to roll. Also I am connected with the load board and I can catch something that my coordinator might not see. And yes you can hook up with the agent in the area you are in. I know guys that call ahead to an agent letting them know they are going to be in the area.

I've been told that most of the reason that there is bad blood between Mercer HQ and Landstar HQ is that the guy that started what is now Landstar and the guy that started Mercer used to be partners way back in the day.

They had a falling out and went their own way to start their own companies. Landstar is now many times larger than Mercer.

When I called the Mercer recruiter and mentioned the list of names I was considering at the top of my list he immediately began to bad mouth Landstar. So much so that I disqualified Mercer right there.
I couldn't have been happier with my time at Landstar... wish I had never left!
