L.B., what about being a trainee? Can you get regional fresh off the trainers truck? How do you get in line for that? Whats the process they use to fill that? A millis driver trainer told me one of his trainees went straight to regional from his truck. Guess what im asking is does a trainee with no experience always have to start otr?

no you dont have to start otr but most of the time there are little to no spots open for short haul. what you do is tell the dispatcher to put you on the list. i got put on the list for trenton regional and got a spot about 3-4 weeks later. so just depends on region and availability

You can start asking questions while in training but it's going to boil down to wether there is an open truck when you test out. Worst case you spend a few weeks on an otr truck. Keep this in mind, regional doesn't have a dispatcher that will hold your hand right out of training like otr does. You will be thrown right into the fire and have to keep up with experienced guys. A few weeks in your own truck otr could be beneficial in the long run.

Its fine powder, I should have asked this in my other thread. Its probably based on how hard you run with either. Based on my reading, regional gets home every weekend, cutting out miles unless you elect to stay out a weekend and the routes are shorter so they can get you home sooner. Otr just depends on how often you stay out. Going home every 14 days for 2 wont make as much as staying out say 6 weeks or so and taking 3 or 4 days off. Ive heard some regional drivers say they are home every weekend and still get about 2500 miles a week. Please correct me if Im wrong guys.

There seems to be a lot of variance from driver to driver and regional location from other guys I talk to. It can depend on if you take the truck home vs park at a terminal, how many times you get home during the week, if you run any weekends etc. I don't run weekends, take my truck home loaded over the weekend, and only go home during the week if it's not going to cost me too many running hours and I average about 2200-2300 miles per week.

I don't train. Very few regional guys are allowed to train because of the smaller trucks. Trainers need a larger heavier truck. The closest trainer I can think of lives in Millidgeville
