HHG VS Practical at Millis

    What are the pros and cons for HHG and Practical. What do most of the drivers choose? Just trying to find out more before my class starts.

    House Hold Guide mileage is much less than Practical miles,,Heartland uses HHG to pay it's drivers but I am sure that they use Practical miles to quote their shippers,
    Of all the mileage guides I am sure that HHG is the shortest . My friend told me that HHG routes are on roads that do not allow 53ft trailers. He eats about 10% of his driven miles each year.

    You lose 5-10% on HHG miles.

    All said and done, Companies paying drivers HHG are ripping them off.

    When I was there hhg paid if I remember correctly 3cpm more than practical

    Millis pay options can be confusing with all the possibilities. I'll break it down like this:

    OTR I recommend practical miles. You will benefit on the longer runs, getting paid for more miles even though the cpm is less. I know guys who tried both systems and they said it averaged out close to the same.

    Regional guys I recommend HHG miles. Regional, by definition, means shorter runs and on the really short runs, i.e. Atlanta to Albany, GA, practical miles and HHG miles are exactly the same miles but HHG pays 3 cpm more. You do the math!

    Per Diem vs. Straight pay: I recommend every one goes on per diem for the first year just because of the extra week of vacation and paid holidays. After that, it depends on what you want/need in your financial situation. Per Diem will show less taxable income on your W2 if you need that for some reason. Straight pay will shore more on your W2. Either way, you can benefit from per diem. On straight pay you just have to figure out the per diem amount at the end of the year and file it as an itemized deduction. Even on regional, I filed over a $12,000 per diem deduction, lowering my taxable income. If you file a 1040EZ and can't itemize, you might want to stay on per diem to take advantage of that, but if you itemize stay on straight pay. Also, safety bonuses are 1 cpm for straight pay and 3 cpm for per diem.

    For what it's worth, I was HHG/ straight pay and after the first year with Millis I was averaging 46 cpm including safety and idle bonuses. Show me somewhere else you can make that money with one year of experience.

    Also to add to the above, even if you are on per diem, I recommend you figure out what your per diem deduction should be at the end of the year. If it is more that the 10 cpm that Millis marks as tax free you can claim the difference.

    Per diem is a scam...the company uses you to lower their tax burden and charges you .02 cpm to do it...what a bargain

    Well there is that.... But for some reason there are a lot of drivers who like it and want it.

    Im still kinda confused on what pay im ganna choose i am ganna try to get regional routes or either a dedicated route when i start there in October what would yall recommend
