I have been thinking about how I want to get into the trucking industry full time. I already have a class A CDL with the X Hazmat & Tanker endorsement. The problem a trucking company might have with hiring me is that my CDL was not obtained through a school and I lack what would normally be considered "verifiable" class A experience. I got my class A around 5 months ago working with a buddy of mine hauling logs. No plans at that time of actually using it for a full time career, but I have really enjoyed it. Since then I have occasionally worked as a fill in driver for him. But other than him simply saying I have experience in one of his trucks, there really isn't any way to verify it. I do have a month of class B tanker experience with a company that is verifiable since I was on the payroll and we did have to log our HOS and such. That is it though.
I know Millis has a school and terminal in Eden, NC. Would they possibly have me come up there and take a road test or something? Even though I already have the CDL, I wouldn't hesitate for a second going through their training school if there wasn't a possibility of owing them thousands of dollars if me working there doesn't pan out. I would love to hear what some of you Millis guys think.
Would I have a chance at Millis?

I think I just came across my answer in a thread further down. Millis requires 1 year OTR or completing their training school. If that isn't correct, let me know. I wouldn't mind going through the school. I have no doubt I would learn a lot. I will be thinking seriously about this.

The recruiter is your first step. Yes, unless you have 1 year OTR, you will be required to go through MTI somewhere...and you will owe them for the class and the OTR training.
BUT, if you already have a CDL...you can gert hired by other companies and do the OTR training and not have to pay for school...doesn't make sense to pay for something again if you already have it.WalterSobchak Thanks this. -
I welcome any suggestions though. -

All the students that go through a 3rd arty school and get their CDL's then get hired by a company and go through their training. The school is only to get your CDL...there is always a training period after it. You have a lot of options this way and don't have to go through a company sponsored CDL school. I would suggest you get on the web and then start making phone calls to recruiters. Do your research on companies that train, not the company schools.
