Hey all, new to forum, not new to trucking....been in it since 1981...right now I run OTR and some local LTL for a small firm on the east coast. The company i work for is great no complaints but we have lost several local accounts due to this terrible economy and i find myself off the road and working on our docks more and more. I'm paid very well, have decent benefits and 401k is solid. However i fear that our firm might be heading under, owners are older fellows that are getting up in age and their sons are pushing for them to sell the company as they don't want much to do with it. Spent the better part of 20 years here but I'm getting older myself and want to keep working but maybe on a regional home everyday punch in punch out gig as a driver for a solid national company. So a thought came to mind, i worked for costco wholesale part-time in the late nineties as a store associate, put my daughter through school with that part time job, pay was great, plus since my trucking job only had me out for a few days a week on dedicated runs i had the weekends to work at my part-time job, I was bringing in solid money. So im thinking about inquiring to be a truck driver for costco, as the distribution center is only a short drive from my house in NJ. Anyone here driver for them? Just looking at retirement in a few years, want something steady but not backbreaking, and i have been with that company before and left on good terms. Any thoughts?

Oh im sure. When i was there as a store associate i saw first hand the receiving operation at the store in the morning, it was truck after truck and every forklift in motion, nobody was slacking! But being paid well usually does that to people....keeps them moving and happy. One time an OTR driver showed up a bit late for his delivery from a mechanical problem with his freightshaker, he had to get somewhere else and pleaded with the Rec.o Mgr to get unloaded, the mgr said ill see what i can do, pulled a guy from another area of the store and unloaded him in about 20 mins...in between doing 2 other trucks. They know what they are doing at Costco stores, no mickey mouse operation at all.

Thats why i would like to drive with them in their private fleet, i would love doing the night haul. Im a night owl.

Costco has their own "private" fleet??? That is news to me. I thought they subcontracted it out?? I know in my area of Pittsburgh, the closest DC is in Hagerstown Maryland and Cowan use to have that account but as far as I know Swift now has it.

I see Costco trucks all the time here in Ca. Straight trucks and truck/trailers.
