You MIGHT want to check out their safety rating...it's in the 90's...so expect to become good friends with the DOT at every scalehouse. The list of their driver's log violations was seemingly endless!

How about food grade tanker companies? Indian River (I think they have a Florida to California run hauling Orange Juice?), Quality Carriers, etc.

You can check with an outfit on Beaver St in Jacksonville, Fl. Severt Transport, Severt Trucking and Severt Tomatos. He hauls produce back and forth from Cali to Florida. Long nose Petes, about 20 or 30 trucks. I hope he still runs. He was very successful, and has a good reputation.

Most produce pays much better than dry freight, but would be difficult to run long distance solo, and still make market deadlines.

SEVERT is still going strong, still located on Beaver Street in Jax. BIG, long, shiny large cars. Believe they are team only. Stay out of their way, those guys do some serious trucking.

Try May Trucking? I think they do alot of Northwest to Southeast. Also Interstate Distributors.

You know, just going off the cpm rate can be misleading, especially when comparing larger companies to small mom-and-pops. Most of the bigger carriers are paying practical miles at best, and some only HHG miles. In that case, their advertised cpm can be higher because they're only paying for something like 90 percent of the actual miles driven. A lot of small carriers still pay actual or hub miles. Just something to think about.

again, thanks for the replies and info -
    # Outerspacehillbilly : while Mays was something I was very interested in they do not hire in TN (unfortunate as they have very nice long length of haul). Interstate did not reply to an email but I will probably apply on-line over the weekend.
    # Henley : CPM and paying hhg miles is why I left Schneider, but being paid 40cpm by Heartland for just 2200 paid miles is still far better than a small company running me 3200 miles at 30cpm and fewer benefits.
    # Rocky64 : Yes, a trucking buddy of mine is familiar with Sever and I checked them out but they are a team operation outfit.
    # skinnytrucker : I will be talking to Transport Design later today - thank you for that lead - very good miles and although based up north, they do run frieght regularly from the SE to the west/far midwest. One of their dispatchers emailed me back and invited me to call him.
Anyone in the Chattanooga area looking right now there is a nice small carpet delivery outfit hiring this weekend (craigslist) but they are multiple stop north/south to IL/MI/OH.
Looks like I will be considering Transport Design (if pay is acceptable), Heartland, K&B, and possibly Interstate. I appreciate the input from everyone!

To share back with you - if you have decent laptop connectivity and ever watch stuff on hulu, I recommend you search and watch "Big Rig" - it was the documentary filmed about 4 years ago and released in 2007 - its a nice look at a couple of dozen different drivers, their jobs, lives, and thoughts - nothing earth shattering, something we all are more than familiar with, but that is kind of the nice part of it, its enjoyable to sit back for an hour and half and see familiar sights, and hear guys express thoughts that we all have - a surprisingly high percentage of the feedback to the movie from non-drivers is positive which is also nice to read! I'm def going to recommend it to my non-driving friends to open thier eyes to my lifestyle a bit more.
    stay safe out there, bb.

I have seen them on I-10 all the time when I was running. Very nice 379 and 389 peterbilt trucks with top of line spread axle trailers.
