    Schneider National Tanker Drivers

    Hi folks,

I need a little help understanding what a Schneider driver told me today. In fact, there were three of them loading at the same terminal as I. Two were salary employess and one was an OTR employee. The OTR employee was picking up the same material as the other two.

Here was his day. He started at 0230 and went to Quality Carriers to get his trailer. It was buried in the back and took some time to get it. He arrived at the loading terminal and waited in line to load. When it was his turn to load, he terminal rejected the trailer due to moisture in the tank. Not the drivers fault. The material can have no moisture in the tank. He took the trailer back and had it dried again. He returned to the terminal to get loaded. after waiting in line, he got under the rack at 1530. That left him an hour to load and find some place to park. Not the greatest area for parking but the terminal gave him the Harbor Patrol number so he could see if it would be okay to park near the terminal.

He told me that this was a completely wasted day. I asked why. He stated that he is not getting paid anything for the day. Not even a layover. Obviously, the salary drivers were, by defintion, getting paid. I felt so bad for this man. He put in at least a 14 hour day and had nothing to show for it!

I would like someone, hopefully from Schneider, to explain to me why this happened. In fact, I'll take any answers from anyone.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why anyone would work for free for any company and for any reason. This man was on duty, in the service of the company for at least 14 hours and yet he received no compensation.

Why does this happen? This seems criminal to me. Anyone?

Its the dry box trucking mentality of only paying for miles driven. Guess that's how they can undercut rates. Its probably ok for someone just starting out of school. Few companies allow you to start on tanks and there are advantages over other forms of freight.

Happens all the time in trucking. About the only exceptions are the LTL carriers. There are a few trucking companies that realize drivers are an "asset" and will throw a few crumbs their way.

Yep it's how Schneider cuts rates in the tanker world by not paying the driver ... Heck I heard of a contract near Kankakee il where they forfited

    1. Vacation time
    2. Personal time
    3. And no pay increases

Just to get a account ..... Now that's thinking of the driver right ....

    Sad organization

Thanks to all of you for your answers. I was hoping a Schneider driver would have given their responce.

It just amazes me that a driver would work any amount of time for their company for free. That man probably put in 14 hours for nothing. So sad.

It just goes to show you, when companies take a gamble on time, it is usually with the OTR guys. I bet they rarely send an hourly driver to pick up an unknown tank for loading.
Another favorite of companies is to dispatch the OTR guys on 7 miles runs to pick up or unload a trailer. Only cost them peanuts to get the job done. And how do they get by with this, "forced dispatch".
    You're right, sad but true.
