Your allowed to over hang off the front of the trailer as much as you want. Off the rear your only allowed 4 feet.

As long as you are no more then 4 feet off the rear, you will not need warning lights or permits. Just put a red warning flag & your good to go.

That's 4' from the frame, not the rub rail. Steel beams can hang over more than that, I'd have to refresh my memory on the law.

Im been doing flatbeds all my trucking career and could of sworned it was 3 feet of over hang. There after you must flag it during the day and lighted at night. I've over hanged up tp 15 feet with out a problem. Remind you this is in California.

In Alaska, without a permit, it was 0 to the left or front of the towing vehicle (think trailered cranes), up to 6 inches to the right flagged or lighted, up to 3 ft to the rear flagged or lighted; over any of those limits needed a permit.

But if he loaded correctly, he probably wouldn't have any over hang!

The excavator boom.... Load them both to where the excavator (backhoe part) is in the middle of the trailer.... Those booms can & will sit side by side if you swing them a little bit.

the laws for rear overhang vary from state to state. Look in a road atlas and call the states you are going to be in, to make certain. The numbers for the DOT in each state will be listed, and they are more than willing to help you be legal. Ive done it several times.
