Too funny, I was just reading an ad on CL about a mail route from Dunn to Jax, Fl. It's with Beam Brothers. Thanks!

I know this thread is a bit old, but since it generally deals with mail contractors, I thought i would post this tidbit of info here.

In addition to the hourly pay, you are paid $4.44 (don't quote for all) per hour up to 40 hrs for "Health and Welfare Benefits". Basically it will pay your health, dental, life, eye, disability if you are single, with a bit left over that you get to keep. Most places it won't totally pay family coverage.
A recent trend has some mail contractors forcing you to put that money in a 401k. Personally I think that's bull. I guess it saves them payroll tax or something. Sometime back there was a post on here about one of the mail contractors, and a company rep had posted ALL mail contractors are doing the forced 401k. That is not true.
My advice is don't work for a company that does this. My company does not do this, and the day they do will be the date of my two week notice. I don't need a company to dictate my retirement plan, I do fine on my own.
Hope that helps some of you looking at mail hauling.

Bancroft was looking hard in Tampa/Orl area 2 weeks ago, had ads every day on CL, they team from these areas and that doesn't really interest me but from what the ads said, pay was pretty good for Florida!

I was just offered a job picking up mail in the York, PA area with a straight truck. I don't have enough recent time driving tractor trailers, most of my driving in the last ten years has been with straight trucks. So I don't have enough time to apply with Beam Bros or Pat Salmon which are the big mail contractors in this area. This company is just a little company. The guy who offered me the job said that the post office doesn't pay until the driver reaches his first stop which will be about an hour before I reach that point, so supposedly I would be on my own time till I get to that first stop. Start time is 3:15 PM in the afternoon just before rush hour starts so basically I would be doing most of my driving through York during rush hour when traffic is at its worst. The company pays for only 2 hours 50 minutes at $18.32 an hour, that is what the guy who offered me the job said. In rush hour traffic, this route will take at least 4 hours maybe 5. At 5 hours that comes out to a little more than $10.00 an hour. Oh and he never said anything about offering any benefit pay that I have heard other companies offer. This thing seems like he is 'nickel and diming' me to get as much money as he can for himself leaving me basically with hardly anything. Any worthwhile comments would be appreciated.

    Beam Brothers raided by Federales:
    http://www.arnoldsafetyblog.com/beam-brothers-trucking-raided-by-feds/

Snip: "The DOT is accusing Beam Brothers of knowingly running their drivers in excess of the hours of service limits and then forcing their drivers to falsify their logs to cover it up. The government says they have at least 7 witnesses who will testify to management forcing drivers to falsify their logs and/or run over hours. In one case, they allegedly threatened to withhold pay until a driver submitted false logs to the office."
