Spoke to a Howard recruiter, there's a 3 - 4 month waiting list of applications right now. If you are currently driving, keep the job and send in a app. They will hire straight out of school, but only if they have a opening.

We had a man come in from Howard today, he is not a recruiter. He is actually a manager in the safety dept. He did not try to "sell" the company, he just gave us the rundown on how they operate and what they expect. he said that they do not have any opening right now but expects ther will be some in the next month that will work out as I have a month to go in school. They have 140 trucks on the road all automatics, Internantionals with 72 and 86 inch sleepers engines between 465 and 515 HP nothing older than 2008, battery operated APU's. you can have a inverter installed but they want their mechanics to do it. He said some of the drivers are complaining about the automatic tranny's. they run paper logs but are looking to change to E-Logs in the next year or so. One thing i was impressed with was that if you get hired they do not put you on the bus to get to orientation, you have the option of driving yourself and be re-embursed for the gas, or they will come and pick you up. Orientation is 4 days they put you up in motel and take care of your meals 3 meals a day. students go out with a trainer for 7 weeks. but you will not be away from home that whole time. he said the drivers are out about 8 days at a time on average, the way it works is you haul transformers out, and usually raw materials back. you do not always come straight back. say you take transformers to South Carolina, then you might get a load of lumber up into Pennsylvania, then maybe a load of steel back to Mississippi. But for the most part you haul Howards freight, their trucks only haul about 50% of their frieght so even when every thing slows down they do not feel it as bad. i know this is a long post but wanted to pass this info along while it was still fresh in my mind.

Yes , Or I am anyway, he gave me a application and i have to finish it and mail it back to them. i wasn't really thinking of trying flatbedding untill i talked to him. one of their benefits i forgot to mention is they pay 100% of the medical insurance for the driver, if you add a spouse or children you have to pay a premium, but the driver is free.

Thanks I finished my ap this morning, keeping my fingers crossed. yea the pay starts at .34 then at 6 months .35 1 year it goes to .37. the thing I forgot to ask is what miles the drivers are averageing per week. Tarp pay is 20.00 and for every stop after the first it is 20.00.

Well, I'm here! Sunny, beautiful Savannah, GA, for the CT Transport speed trials...aka...orientation and workwell physical! :biggrin_2556:
The Red Roof Inn, here, is really nice. I even went swimming in the outdoor pool!! Okay, no, they didn't call the police. :biggrin_2559:
By this time tomorrow evening, we'll have separated the men from the boys...and our backs from our fronts, too, probably!!! I'm going to take a shot at this thing, though!
I didn't even know that CT ran automatics!! The cool thing is that I'll get to go out with a trainer-----sure hope he's got a goatee and sideburns, broad shoulders, and that he wears cologne. (STOP IT! YOU LECHEROUS OLD COW!!:biggrin_25513:)
Anyway, wish me and the other lady driver here luck for tomorrow's lift... if we make that, the rest ought to be gravy!
Oh, yeah. I'd be running out of the Mocksville, NC terminal. Good luck to those of you who are seeking to hire on. I'll let you know how tomorrow goes!

Well, down here at the CT Transport Speed Trials----the physical was a total disaster!! I failed it--and have 115#'s worth of bruises on my forearms, thighs, and other spots to prove it!
Thanks, though, for the lifting tips---the ones I got, I got with your advice! We ended up lifting a milk crate filled with weights, instead of a tarp... I don't really know whether that made so much difference (It's the same amount of weight).
I'd have been working out of the Mocksville, NC terminal, so they are hiring for that area. The Savannah terminal manager told someone that there were no openings there, so no on that particular terminal.
Pleasant, professional, kept their promises---I liked 'em, and the weekends at home would have been great. Take a look at 'em!
Back to the ol' drawing board!

Bummer, Jewels. I know I can do the test with a tarp, but not sure with a crate of weight. It doesn't handle the same. Will have to practice.

If you still want to try your hand at flatbedding, give Maverick a call. You may be a bit too far east of their hiring area, but they do use a tarp for the test. They don't have the guaranteed weekends home like CT, but they do a very good job of getting you home.

Got some other ideas, will let you know.
