I did a search and only came up with "I don't knows" or super old posts. So here it is, I have been looking to get back into flatbed and did one of those applications that go to a million and one companies. Well I got about 30 different companies that wanted me to start orientation. From those companies I narrowed it down to 2. Some got dismissed cause of pay, miles, likelyhood of hometime, or where they run, or what equipment they have. The 2 companies I have decided on are Tandem Transport, and Hunt Transportation.

Im looking for someone that is currently driving for or knows very closely someone who is driving for these companies that can answer some questions. Mostly like:

    1) Is thier hometime as good as they say? (home every weekend)
    2) Do they run APUs?
    3) Will they allow inverters in the tuuck to run items such as coffee pot, microwave, fridge?
    4) How many miles do you run in a typical week?
    5) What kind of frieght do you typicaly pull?
    6) Is the equipment good or will I be getting pulled into the scales for a DOT everytime I go thru?

I just want to make sure Im making a good decision for myself and my family. I dont want to be signed onto a company that will be the opposite of the promisses they make getting you to come to orientation.

    Thanks for any info!

I just got off the phone with Doug at Tandem. Nice guy and very helpful, as most recruiters are. After all they want you in thier seats to get thier bonuses.

After about an hour long talk here is the info I got:

-Orientation length: 4 days (Monday through Thirsday)
-Orientation pay: $1000 paid as follows, $200 at completion of orientation, $400 on
the first Friday after and $400 on the second Friday after.
-They will rent you a car or put you on a bus, but they try to get the car first.
-You arrive on Sunday night and share a room for that night only. Then its off to the
    driver rooms at the terminal.
-All trucks are 05 or newer Freightliners, Volvos, or Internationals.
    -No APUs.
-Trucks do have Qualcom, most have Elogs
-CPM is calculated on experience (wont say what mine is as its pretty good)
-They tarp 90% of all frieght (mostly building matereals) and that pays anywhere
from $10-25 per load. (I think thats really low, most companies pay at least $50)
-They are considered to be OTR but most drivers are home on weekends
-They calculate thier miles through PC Miler and avg. 350-500 miles per run. Drivers
    avg. 2200-2400 miles per week.
-They offer BCBS (kicks in 91 days after first load is picked up)
-They do have a rider program but you have to married to the man/woman to have
them ride. Your kids can ride but they have to be 12 years old or older and they
can only ride for 2 weeks out of the year between the spring and fall months. NO
    PETS!!!
-Layover pay is $120 that includes breakdowns that cause you to miss a load.
    -They haul 80% building materials
-Detention pay kicks in after 2 hours and is $25 an hour
-Multi stop pay is $25 per pick up and drop and also includes mileage pay
-Reconsigned loads is $50 plus mileage
-If you haul double stack tar paper that is $50 extra
-If you load/unload on Saturday that is $50
-If you get a laod to one of the five boroughs of NYC (not very often) that is $50
-If you get DOTed at any level and have no violations that is $50
-If you refer a driver and they complete orientaion and 6 months you both get $1500
-Fuel bonus of .01-.03 cpm is available and is calculated by MPG, if you fuel at an
approved station or not, and idle time.

Hope this answers some questions for drivers looking into Tandem. I know it has answered mine and then some.

    TDriver4Life Thanks this.

    Hey cbtalker205
I don't know if this will help, but I worked there from 02 to o9.I was there when all our pay was cut,I went from .44cpm to .42cpm they cut our no-load pay and breakdown pay in half, the 1st 5 years never missed a weekend at home but the last 2 years I had many weekends out on short runs 300-500 miles.
Once upon a time there were 6 of us at tandem that lived in the eastern U.P. of michigan, there is only 1 left and I here he is looking. The other 5, of us are working at a small company, plus 4 or 5 from down state that used to work at tandem are here, not as much pay but no knife in the back either.
Like most big companies at tandem its your fault no matter what, never happened to me but I saw a lot of it happen to other drivers and office and shop personnel.
Where you live it might be better for you,oh detention pay only if shipper pays it,same with tarp pay.
Not trying to dis. tandem I made good money there the one chum of mine made 65k I made around 50k,it is what it is in trucking nowadays watch your back around the office people at mich city, get in get out and out of their sight.
Sad part about this tandem was a great place to work at once, but a change in managment to people who would not know the diffrance between a shift lever and a steering wheel run the place now,and know nothing of what it takes to get a load from point a to b as far as the driving part, they can count there beans and tell you how long it should take you, and how much it costs them, but thats all they know.

Luftkoph, Thanks for your input. Im thinking Ill start with them on the 12th. Well orientation anyway. They sound good, maybe too good to be true. I dont need to be babysat by office people so I wont be in there long. As long as they get me home Ill be good. I dont have a problem getting my loads to thier destination. And I dont really care about many of the "extras" but dont want to be screwed either.

You'll be running your tail off trying to get that many miles in a week doing short hops like that! Add loading, unloading, tarping, untarping and waiting time>elogs ain't gonna let it happen. $50 to go to the 5 boroughs is chicken feed as is their tarp pay.

For what it's worth their ad in the local paper is offering a 5000 dollar sign bonus for company drivers. Yes I said 5000. I'm not saying that's good or bad but it's something to think about.

i worked at tandem for just over a year. all i can say is its a trucking company and there using u to make money. im not going to say they suck but ill be honest with u. u tarp ur ### off and quiet often dont get payed for it.brokered tarp only pays $10.u only get the $25 tarp if the company gets paid by the customer.more often than not u wont get tarp pay.ur miles per day avg between 300 to 350 so u usually tarp and untarp 2 times aday.there equipment is worn out i went thru 4 trucks in a month.they do have some new pro stars but just getting hired on u wont get close to one.if u break down clean ur truck out cause u will go into another truck . be prepared to run a lot of midwest and north east they do run some florida time to time. dont belive the home weekend crap. the luv giving u a load fri eve that delivers on monday and its only 2 to 300 miles away.when u do get home avg every 2 wks its ust enough to reset ur hrs.as for as the 5000 dollar bonus never meet anyone who qualified for it. dont think any company out here is just going to give u 5 grand to drive for them.i ran out of there savannah ga terminal, overall the dispatchers were very good.i think the company has a shoe string budget and the drivers pay the price.i left after one year made decent money. one week i could bring home 850 the other 2 weeks mabe just over 650. thats flatbedding tho. good one week just ok the other.orientation is good. ull stay in a hotel probably the 1st nite then u will go to a room at the terminal, dont choose a room over the shop there not that nice and the shop works untill 11pm.doug green and john asby do orientation and there very good and willing to help anyway they can.just keep in mind there company people and will not tell u the negative things about the company. they wont hesitate to send u home if ur a problem. as i said its a trucking company like all others there there to make money there not going to give u a thing, tandem was okay to work for better than lots of other outfits out there and worse than some others. its what u the drver make of it. the reason i left wa i got tired of working for free,, i e not getting paid to tarp. hung out on weekends, and the last 2 months had a lot of equipment trouble which resulted in me getting low miles.i took my one week vacation and turned my truck and equipment in at savannah. thought i was getting vacation pay but there saying no i did not qualify for a paid vacation. i guess ill have to go to the labor board and file a complaint.
