I'm a current local tanker driver giving some thought to this food grade tank company out of the Lancaster PA area. From the outside looking in, they appear to be a decent company. Of course they all "look good", but what I'd like to know is if anyone drives for the company, or knows of someone who does, that can give me a little bit of first hand information for future reference? Things I'd like to know are:

    1. What is the pay scale? Load percentage or mileage? Per diem?
    2. How are you treated by the company (dispatchers, planners, etc)?
    3. Running area and home time?
    4. Truck idle time for sleeping?

One thing that concerns me though is the commute to work. If I remember correctly, someone had said that you can't take the equipment home with you for time off. I can understand this as it's food grade tank, and equipment needs to be washed out if empty, and if loaded, the possibility of someone messing with the load. Still, I live about an hour and a half away, and I'm just not sure I want to start or finish my day/week with that kind of a commute to/from the house.

Sometimes I wish I could get my wife to move from the crappy area we live in as there are many more opportunities in the larger metro areas. Gas prices what they are, I'm reluctant to do a long commute and throw a good chunk of change into the gas tank each week. Still, I'm always looking for a good potential opportunity, especially when my current situation isn't so good. Our business picked up due to Hurricane Sandy, but for 2 months prior, it was tough to get a full week worth of work, and once things get back to normal, we could be struggling again.

If you're in a crappy area & generally unhappy with it, then move, otherwise you take years & years off your life. Find a good job that pays well, H.R. Ewell or whatever, and move. When you find yourself sitting in a rocker with a stroke, it will be too late. Sorry I can't be of more help.

From what I've heard they raised their pay and is strict on appointment times. Never heard any bad comments EVER about this company. Good luck

I've never heard either good or bad about them. I see you are from Tamaqua, if H.R. Ewell dosen't fit your needs, maybe consider J.P. Donmoyer. Before you flame me for this, allow me to say I am NOT a recruiter for them, just a former driver for them. I left about two years ago for a better paying local gig. They are in Ono, right off exit 85 on 81. You have probably seen their trucks in the area pulling pneumatic tanks. They have a bad reputation, but I can say after working there, most of what you hear about them is B.S. The trucks are mechanically solid, pay is average, hometime is good, work is steady, and they let you idle the truck to stay comfortable (as long as you dont get carried away). The office people knew you by name, not number, and treated you with respect. (at least that was MY experience). Only reason i left was for more money and a local job, but i would go back in a second if needed.

It's either stay in the general area, or divorce if I want to move. It is what it is I suppose...

I see they have some local stuff, but that wouldn't work as I'm pretty far from their terminal. As for the OTR/regional aspect, how are they for home time? Do they try to get you home every weekend? Also I see they have a van division. What does that entail, if you by chance know? Is it general freight, or does it lean more toward construction materials?

If you're in Tamaqua, I hear Fox is decent, if you're ok pulling reefers and doing the cold-storage/grocery warehouse shuffle. They're in Hometown if I remember...

About Ewell, I'd love to know if their regional guys get to take the truck home. Looking for a foodgrade tank gig that lets you, but not coming up with much that's regional.

When I was there, the OTR tank drivers could easily get home every weekend, in fact most did. I worked a 6/2 schedule, out 6 days and home 2 full days, and i loved it. Usually got home around noon my sixth day and still had the next two fulll days off. They do have a van division, i cant speak too much about it, as i ran tank. The couple van loads i did were local runs nobody wanted. (my wife was expecting at the time so i needed to be close to home). when i needed time off, i simply told dispatch about it, and there was never an issue. about the only negative thing i could think of about them was this: they have a high turnover rate. The reason for this I think was that most people didnt want to get a little dirty.(it can be a dirty job). They also had a game they liked to play with everyone where the new drivers seemed to get the better loads for the first couple weeks, then they would try to starve you. They did it to me, I went and had a meeting, and it got resolved. Meanwhile, most other guys simply quit. Sorry so long winded. You can PM me if u want more info

Hi Voyager, I grew up in PA, right near you. You have some good choices right by you that maybe you never thought about. I know you worked for Calex but not sure if you are able to go back there. But, with that being said, Wegmans is the best driving job around. That would be my first choice by far. You are home daily and pay and benefits are better than Walmart. Also, Walmart was hiring in pottsville not long ago. I'll name a few more and you can do 60 grand easy with any of these. Ashley Furniture in Leesport, great pay and benefits, off weekends and home throught the week. AutoZone in Hazleton is another good one. A good driving, work record and positive attitude can get you any one of these. I have friends who work for all of these and are very happy. So, my choices in order would be 1. Wegmans 2. Ashley 3. Autozone and 4. Walmart. Odd I would put Walmart at #4 for a job, but thats my personal opinion. Take your time, make a few calls, and you'll be in a job you would retire from out of those choices. Good Luck ad keep us posted
