Idling Policy

What companies have the best idling policy?I know Schneider is very strict on it.I can't see trying to sleep in 100+ heat in a rig. Thanks for the replies in advance.

My brother drove for the big pumpkin
He said they are paid for not idleing and if was tooo cold or warm you could call and have it adjusted as not to affect your bonus

I would start paying less attention to this, and more attention to companies that are equipping their vehicles with APU's.

I drive for a small company, and even they are equipping all their new equipment with APU's.

Alternatives to idling is the wave of the future in trucking, look for companies that are getting on board early, because it isn't going away.

I agree with Sportsoutlaw. I also work for a company with 350 thrucks and they have an APU on every OTR truck. They claim the fuel savings far outweigh the cost. I know our idle rate is below 5%.
If I was considering changing companies to one that does not have an APU installed, I would consider the "idleing bonus" a "not going to happen" item. I refuse to be uncomfortable for a penny or two, the boss is not uncomfortable, nor is the office staff.

I use Idleaire alot. Much cheaper than idling and you get the weather channel too.

Can a person buy it for themselves if the company doesn't provide it? I looked it up but could not find any pricing info.

Without seeing prices, I'd say count on $5K to $10K range for the unit/equipment if don't buy in quantity, and a couple of thousand for labor to install. Its no $1000 item like a gps. You'd be the first I've heard to buy one as a driver. And if you get the cheapest, it may break and damage your truck. Don't think company would take that chance on their trucks. Diesels are high compression precision machines and can screw up fast if not within specs.

May Trucking is Summer time 30% of your total driving time. If I understand it right and then winter time it goes down to 10% but we have bunk heaters.

What companies have or will be getting APU's if you guys know? What about those small inverters the sell for camping and such?

As for IdleAire, I am told it costs around $1.85 per hour and around $10 for the window adapter, but the adapter is yours once you buy it.

I drive for Decker Transport. No "rules" about idling were ever discussed at orientation and it is not discussed in handbook. On the flip side, no bonus for low idle I guess. Hope everyone goes to APU in time. For now, I will be comfortable. My first 2 days in the truck the air didn't work. Got that fixed, and I will never be that miserable again. I run the opt idle always. So does every driver I have talked to there.
