Newbie, Looking at Crete Carrier

I am looking at apply with after, I am done with my school. I would like to hear from current drivers or past drivers, both good and bad about them. I have talk with them a few times, and I have had one person tell me to sign up for the General Mills after I get done with my training. I would also like to know if they're looking at getting APU units on there trucks. Thanks for all the info that I can get.

Tigger, Please search for "Crete" using the "search" Utility. There have been plenty of good/bad posts about many companies, I am sure there is plenty about Crete

Tigger -
I drove the General Mills fleet for 3 years - you will be paid 5 cents less per mile than you would receive with the National Fleet.
They tout that it is "mostly" drop and hook, but when I got out of the fleet about one year ago, my figures showed I was doing about 60% drop and hook.
Some of the General Mills locations are suppliers - flour companies, paper companies, fruit, metal, sugar, you get the idea. Some of those places you will be detained for more than 2 hours and some of them DO NOT pay detention due to the General Mills contract (not many, but it will happen so be prepared).
Also be prepared to run into/thru Chicago on a regular basis. Not city deliveries, but getting past town to go to Milwaukee, or West Chicago, or Romeoville. Maybe 3-4 times a month you will hit the Chicago region and its traffic (this is important especially because you have to "log it as you drive it" meaning to pick up at West Chicago at 3 pm with a desire to get over to Gary for the evening, will mean logging that 70 miles as 2 hours or more - so almost every week you will lose at least an hour to traffic)
I switched to national where I got the pleasant surprise that I had a HIGHER drop and hook rate (about 80%) with them than with GM.
There are pluses!
One is working with the fleet dispatch.
Another is that most are pick-ups and drops with a large appointment window - most live loads are at the suppliers with a decent appt. window, few exact appt. times.
And most deliveries are at GMills drop lots with 12/24 hour windows.
The biggest plus, is if you are taking time off near one of the distribution centers, you CAN get time off every 2 weeks with little problem. (I took time at the New Kingstown terminal, about 30 miles from Palmyra, PA)

It will be frustrating to sit at a supplier knowing you are getting 38cpm while the guy next to you may be a national fleet driver getting 43pm.

After a year, the ONLY thing I miss about that fleet is the easier opportunity for scheduled time off near a GMills plant.

Crete is good

Crete's a good company. I worked for those guys and was happy with them. I got tired of trucking in general and walked away, but if I ever went back, CCC would be my company of choice.

I probably sound like a recruiter for these guys. Don't worry...I'm nowhere near a recruiter for Crete. I'm just a guy who's been with both good and bad trucking companies, so I know the difference. And there is a big difference.

Yeah I drive a Swift truck
And that means one thing
It means she's slow
It's a typical company truck
It's just all show and no go

I'm gettin' passed by Yella
And even Overnite
I'm gettin' passed by ever' body in sight
46 days on the road
And I'm not gettin' home tonight

No, my hometown's nowhere in sight
And if you think I'm pissed off
You're right
46 days on the road
And I'm not gettin' home tonight

Love pissing off those trucking company insiders.

Yes, Crete DOES have a pretty good reputation overall. Like all trucking companies, they DO have problems at times and I am sure someone will tell you about some of those...but, Crete is a FAR cry from a company like JB Hunt, etc. Put it this way, IF I ever went back into trucking, even I would think about them. It would be a good company to start out with, IMHO.
