Dont Do it

Do not work for falcon. There have been days when my husband would make the equivalent of $6.00/hr---continually driving. One load that was frequently given to him basically took him the entire length of PA and OH for a wopping $134. He would have made more money doing a double shift at a wal-mart. The best week he had he made like $740 gross...and that was in 6 days. Most typically the pay is around $600 gross. Serious disappointment.

Falcon Good & Bad

I was van. You don't make any money, not enough miles. You can run from Cambridge, OH to Jersey, then Silgan cans and back to Pittsburgh. But they just can't turn the runs quick enough. Silgan is always a slow load. Load planning does not happen, but that seems to be the case anywhere you go.

They advertise (for GC Van) that you are home 3-weekends a month. What they don't advertise is you will average about 12-1500 miles a week if you take your weekends at home. The only time I made decent checks was when I ran for 3 weeks at a time. Even at that, the money wasn't worth the time it took to earn it.

Some good things - $30 a day per diem (cash) when you work over the weekend. They pay for showers. They pay for motels (1 during the week, plus Saturday and Sunday night) - a really nice deal. Their Health Insurance is inexpensive. I thought they did a good job of maintaining the equipment - but I ran out of West Middlesex, PA - their main terminal.

Generally, good people (support staff) - but they are limited by lousy marketing (not much contracted freight - lots of CH Robinson).

I posted somewhere else, they seem to have more trucks and drivers than freight. I think management is mainly nepotism and cronyism - low wattage energy saver bulbs.

One last thing - DOT hates them. Whenever the DOT is out you will get the arrow inviting you to pull around back.

They had a crash at the beginning of the summer. The Trainer and Trainee BOTH fell asleep. Smashed into a bridge abuttment around Chicago. A fiery mess, but no one got killed. Word on the street was the trainee is going to sue Falcon - who knows.

That's it Fort Pitt.

Thanks guys, I will stay away from falcon. Maverick sent me the green light this morning. All my efforts will be to get on with them. $500 for orientation, $550 a week for training. They start out at 36 cents a mile. The only bad thing is they dont pay tuition reimbursement. This would be a non factor to me if I am making 16000 more a year anyway.

Good Luck

I don't know much about Maverick, but my Dad worked for Transport America for 13 1/2 yrs, and never had any problems with them. He was the #2 driver out of the North Jackson, Ohio terminal, now a very good friend of mine works out of the same terminal and has been with them for almost a yr and he really likes them to. Regardless of what company you choose, good luck.
