The post office uses private contractors to haul mail. Pat Salmon Trucking is one of the bigger ones but there are several. Several threads here by and for mail haulers.

USPS also has fleets of their own and their own drivers, as well as yard spotters, for example, at DCs (Distribution Centers) as well as mail contractors, like the one I drove for between Bloomington, Indiana and Cincy. An example of a DC would be the DC in Sharonville, north of Cincy.

The OP seems to be asking about direct employee drivers of USPS, not mail contractors. In Cincy, it was all union. Odd rules. Yard spotters were not allowed (!) to check out lights and/or road worthiness of trailers they spotted to doors to be loaded.

As a result, it was a crapshoot whether a loaded trailer would leave the yard, wait for a repair (if possible) or have to be off-loaded and contents reloaded into ANOTHER trailer that was not checked for road worthiness.

Dock crews got progressively very, very short tempered...

The Post Office does employ Drivers for the Local and Short Haul Runs. They make good money and benefits. As far as experience goes, I talked to one who was right out of school. Being an army vet will help you get hired, too. Put in your application.

That is because you get extra points for being in the military on the civil service exam.
