Any Dr Pepper/7up drivers here?

    Got a job as a merchandiser for the local Dr Pepper/Snapple distributor a few months ago. Basically I use my own car to drive to a group of large stores every day (Walmart, Copps, etc) and stock their shelves/displays from pallets. The pay is $14/hour.

    They have a large fleet of side loaders here, basically the trucks run a route stocking the smaller stores/gas stations like Walgreen's, Kwik Trip, BP, etc. They have openings for side bay drivers so I was thinking about transferring over to that division. They start you out as a driver helper while you're getting your CDL A. I already have my Class B CDL and the Fed Med card but they only have like 1 straight truck so I'd pretty much have to get the CDL A. Not sure what the exact hourly rate is but I know it's better than what I'm getting right now as an account merchandiser.

    My question is, is it worth it? I know a lot of people say the hours suck and it's back-breaking work but if I get a few clean months in I could jump ship and go OTR for a smaller company somewhere? I'm 21 currently so my options are pretty limited. Just seems like a good opportunity to get a CDL for free instead of having to pay to go to school somewhere.

    in the oskalossa iowa plant all the drivers are union drivers. that alone would make the job very attractive. i see the same dr pepper driver on my school bus route every morning at the same time at the same place. after three years of this we wave pretty much every day. he drivers a day cab and it says dr. pepper on the trailer all that really means he gets home everyday. thats just my thoughts lots of luck on your choice

    I applied for a delivery driver 2 days ago for dr.pepper.Badger if you're considering switching jobs within the company I would at least try it and ask your boss if it doesn't work out can you come back to the job you have now.

    Yeah I was originally applying for the driver helper job but I was offered the merchandising position at the time and it was a pretty good deal. Not to say I don't like my current job but it would be nice to get that Class A if I ever want to go OTR or try some other kind of trucking job.

    The drivers at my center are not union, but the pay/benefits are pretty good.

    Right now you're making $14.00 an hr,you're not going to make that over the road,more like 10.00 an hr.

    Union or not, Dr Pepper Snapple group is the lowest paying of the main three pop distributors. Around the Chicagoland area, Coke Merchandisers are salaried around $700 a week, the driver helpers are about $750, drivers are about $1,050. 7up merchandisers are around $14 hr, driver helpers around the same, drivers make money based off of an hourly wage plus commission off of sales. At Pepsi, where I worked, merchandisers are about $17 an hour, driver helpers $18 an hour. The drivers make a base pay of $75.50 plus 31-32 cents per case. After 8 hours you make what they call Chinese over time, basically it's based on what your average hourly wage is for the day. 7up did this, as well as Coke.

    Out of all the places, 7up pays the least, but you also handle fewer cases than the other 2. 7up 350-400, coke 400-450, Pepsi 500-550 (Pepsi side loaders still deliver to some medium size stores like berkots, Target etc., both coke and 7up only do small stores, and they bulk the rest.) any chance you got to make more money and get your class A, you take it. The work is a bit tough, but think of it like this, you could always be a beer delivery guy and work twice as hard averaging 750+ cases a day and 1,000+ during the summer months.

    I don't work for Dr P/ 7up but I do work beverage (beer) we all work the same and I know a lot of the guys at all the other Beverage companies. The guys here (Canada Dry) do ok, their Union here not sure about where you are, that can make a huge difference. Running a side loader can be a lot of work, I did it a lot when I started and was a spare driver / helper. You typically get a salary plus commissions on everything on the truck. Now I'm on bulk delivery and just bump docks and dump pallets which I prefer myself but if your merchandising and can get a route then go for it. You'll make more doing beverage work and being home every day than you will starting out going OTR. Use beverage for what it is, a path to get a better job. I kept in touch with pretty much everybody from school and only 3 of us went OTR, everybody else stayed local. Us local guys minus 1 are making significantly more than the OTR guys. I'm in my 2nd year now and looking into some jobs that I now qualify for that are starting in the 60k range.

    That was kind of the plan. I wouldn't really want to run side loaders long term, it's back breaking work. The main thing is if I can get my Class A and a couple clean months in as a side loader driver. I have a Class B currently but I've found that it's just too hard to find a good job that's CDL B only. All the good stuff requires Class A + experience minimum. I also work part time for a school bus company that has a coach division but they require coach bus drivers to be 25 yrs old (almost 22 here) so that's not an option (at least for now).

    At my warehouse we only have 4 bulk drivers and they're all guys that busted their ### for years running side loaders before they got the job. Yeah, not interested in sticking around that long.

    Seems like the Pepsi and Coke guys work way harder than I do. Dr Pepper has like half the shelf space in every store compared to those guys.

    Try to last longer than a few months.. Believe it or not, the work days fly by, even though you bust ###. I miss doing it, and I would still be there if they weren't gonna put me permanently on a route out in Garfield Park(bad ghetto). Some of those guys who've been doing it 15-20 years say they only planned on doing it for the short term as well. It's not a bad job to have, the pay is respectable and the benefits usually are pretty good. Try to get at least 1 year in and that should open the door for you to other good paying jobs that are a little less abusive on the body.

    I heard from dr.pepper/Snapple yesterday.I have an interview Monday.The person I spoke with was a speed talker so it was very hard understanding him.Hopefully the interview goes real well and I start sometime next week.Ray is fully aware I may not go to Vegas with him and I guess the plane ticket is valid for a yr.So if not this yr maybe next yr use it for when Nascar comes to Vegas.Im not looking to get rich just pay for the work I do.I like the hrs I would be working which is 6 am till around 230 pm mon thru fri.
