sammons out of missoula, mt

Thinking about going to work for sammons out of montana they also have a teminal in salt lake, just wondering if anyone has ever worked for them. Any info would be appreciated.....thanks jb

 

I've been with Sammons for about a year and a half. I do heavy-haul which is not the same as their flatbed/stepdeck div. So keep in mind, my opinion about my experience is only from the standpoint of 6-axle heavy-haul.

About once every two months (it used to be once a month before the economy dropped), I'll get a load that pays $8500 on 800 miles. This is what keeps me going.

I average about one load every week (sometimes one load in two weeks), and each load is about 1000 miles (average). The usually pay around $4000 or $5000 gross ($3000+ to the truck). My average month is about
..$12000 (but can range anywhere from $6000 to $16,000)
-$2000 fuel
-$1600 trailer rent
-$800 maint & ins

In other words, I clear about $5000 a month ON AVERAGE and I'm usually home half the time (about 10 to 15 days a month at home). Most loads go to Texas. Half the time I'll get a load out of there, 25% of the time I'll deadhead 1000 miles, 25% of the time I'll deadhead home.

Keep in mind this is average. I have had months where I cleared $15k or $2k. So it really varies. If my truck wasn't paid off I couldn't make it here. But since I'm lazy, my truck is paid off, and I love being at home, it works for me.


I only haul $3.50 a mile and up freight (truck gets 76%). Once in a while I'll get $5 or $6 a mile and rarely $10 a mile. Sometimes I'll bend and take a cheaper one ($2.00 a mile) if it gets me home, but that is my general rule. There have been MANY times that I waited a few days, found no "decent paying" load and just deadheaded home.

My overall opinion is- if you own your own trailer and your truck is paid for, and you don't want to work that hard, and you're into heavy hauling, Sammons is the best. You can pick and chose your loads.

BUT, if you have truck payments to make and NEED to make good money, go elsewhere!

I made more money pulling reefers for $1.20 a mile (back when fuel was $1.30) but I ran my ### of in those days. I now have a lazy-mans job and love the hometime.

 

I hear they are getting close to closing their doors. Just fired a bunch more people.

 

Looks like Sammons of Missoula MT is getting close to closing their doors. They have no business and just fired a bunch more people just to make payroll. How much longer until the checks start bouncing?

If you don't mind I am going to tag along with your thread. I've got a friend who is interested in Sammons. He wants to lease purchase a truck from them. He also wants to be home quite a bit (south east TX). I have be an O/O for several years, and I am skeptical that his dreams will come true with Sammons. I am trying to research the company for him, but I cannot find much of anything except the company website.

 

Their safety scores (SafeStat) are not too good. Could be a problem with CSA 2010 coming to town in a few months.

 

i talked to one of their drivers. he told me the lease drivers get good loads and miles and the o/o gets leftovers if they can find them anything. he tols me he has been sitting for 2.5 days now and as soon as he gets home he is leaving them.

 

I work for Sammons. First off we are financially sound. We are part of UTI a publicly traded company. (Ticker symbol UTIW)
Montana is a CSA 2010 pilot state. We are fine safety wise, we are always looking to be better.
As for the Lease drivers getting the loads and miles and the O/O getting the leftovers. That is not possible. Drivers choose the loads they want. Loads are offered to the first person empty in an area then the second etc by ETA's or empty times. If you don't return calls they will go to the next one. If you say you don't take loads for under $3.00 per mile then you won't be offered loads under $3.00 per mile.
The drivers that plan, communicate, and are dependable do very well. There is no different treatment for the Owner Operators and the Lease trucks.
We run flatbeds, step decks, RGN's and Heavy Haul. There can be some waiting on loads but this is percentage work. Waiting a day to get a load that pays well makes more sense then running around for pennies like companies with mileage contracts would have you do.

I know one wasn't happy in the above post but it wasn't for the reasons in the post it was because he wasn't allowed to go back on Heavy Haul again and he only wanted a load going to his house.

thats a good deal that drivers choose their loads but it also depends on what kind of loads that are being offed to them to pick from.
