Alvan Motor Freight to close down, file for bankruptcy Alvan Motor Freight to close down, file for bankruptcy 6/30/08 Quote: A motor carrier company based in Kalamazoo is closing down and filing for bankruptcy. And that could affect jobs right here in Michiana. The president of Alvan Motor Freight says several problems led to the decision to close down. James Van Zoeren says the 87-day strike at American Axle had a trickle down effect that slowed or stopped much of the company's production. He also cites increased competition in the trucking industry, rising diesel fuel prices, and -- on a larger scale -- the financial crisis affecting families across the country. Alvan has more than 500 employees. ok ok ok - so to read this press release - and combine it with what I know is kind of confusing... the president of the company is citing the strike at AA for their downfall (amongst other things)??? sounds like they had "all their eggs" in one proverbial basket... " a trickle down effect that has stopped much of our production..." one account put them under? something does not ring true about that - Alvan had been branching out and touching some of our accounts in the last year (to our dismay). And when they took the outbound WPAFB contract from ABF last october it came out in the wash that they were going to run general freight and not charge for liftgate/inside/door to door on office moves and bulk package. these are some strange times we are living in here in "freightland"... __________________ TEAMSTERS LOCAL 100 Faster than a 60 MPH bullet....
