I am wondering if all you experienced drivers can reference decent companies that will take on New guys and not shaft us. I'm looking to get that experience under my belt so I can have more options unless the company I got into treated me well enough. Seems like every company has nightmare stories and makes us new guys wonder if there is a comapany worth working for. I know that I'll have to be away from home, but knowing I'll get decent home time is a big plus having young kids. PLEASE HELP US NEW GUYS!!!!! I am going to school on my own, so won't need to get a company CDL schooling, although I know others will so all the help will be great.

I've looked online and found companies that interested me, then saw to many negatives. Just want a company that will be honest with me from the get go and treat me fairly.

I always say stay away from recruiters. You can go out and find the company yourself. No one can tell you what company is good for you, or you can do that. But what you can do is cut the recruiter out and go out and find a company that fits your needs.

You can make a list of requirements that you would like to have and then download the trucking compaies in your area. Weed through them and get rid of the small truck type companies like the rental places. Even keep the companies that require experience. Once you have the list then your first move would be to GO out to these companies and talk to the hiring people. Show them you have a real interest in their company. If you really like the company and they tell you that you'll need more experience then ask them what you can do that would help you get on with them faster. I've sent drivers over to our common carrier and some of them have gotten hired. But seeing the people in person you show them you are willing to work and you're not just a number.

After you've spent all your time and resources and if you've still come up empty then you can start to contact the companies that advertise for drivers. Still keep your list and rate them from top to worse. If you've got a clean record you'll find work by this time. If your record is not so clean then you'll most likely need a recruiter. But at this time you're at the mercy of the companies because there's many drivers before you that look better.

The object is to look for the best and go from there. You'll see in school the recruiters will only talk about the few companies that have the high turnover rate. Their interest is not you it's with the company they place you with. Don't believe a word they say and do your own research. It's real easy to find a company that is good to work for. 1st look for drivers that retire. If they keep drivers it's for a reason. Second talk with the drivers.

It may take you a long time to find a good company or you might even get lucky. You can start while you're in school. At least if you do it this way you'll know that you gave it your best shot and didn't let someone else find your job. Good luck.

Thanks GasHauler. There are a few companies that I am interested in once I have the experience. It's just that first company that I'm trying to weed out of the bunch. I'm willing to pay my dues, I just want to be treated like a human.

    Go to safestat.
    Click the Carrier list tab.
    Interstate Carrier search.
    Then your state Maine.

You will end up with about 57 pages, most are 1-2 unit companys. But on page 55 there are a group of company's with 20-400 units. Most of these are service company's, electric, lawn care, ect.
But some are trucking company's. It may be worth it to look thru them. And start with a small company. Many of them have a very hard time finding new drivers with the proper attitude.
