I'm interested in Gilster as well. Does anyone know their policy on hiring newbies or do they require a certain amount of experience. Also, their hiring area, i'm from extreme Southern Illinois and I know they have a plant in Nashville, IL.

They have hired newbies in the past, don't know if they are now. Out of my class there were 4 of 8 that went straight to Gilster out of school. I went there after a year at another company.
I live about 70 miles away from the Perryville yard. It's not too bad. Living far away does limit you going home during the week. If you are local to the Perryville, Chester, Steeleville area, you can be home during the week as well as the weekend.

I used to pick up quite a bit at the Perryville plant. I was working for Schneider out of the Wal Mart DC in Olney, IL so we'd get backhauls of cereal from there. I always liked going there. People were nice, it smelled real good in the cereal plant, and they let us park on the drop lot and take our 10. Also they would load you early if the product was available (most of the time it was) and the loads were LIGHT.
I talked to several of their drivers and they liked it, but I lived in Flora so I was a little out of pocket for their hiring area. I never even talked to any recruiters or anything.
Interesting side note: I notice the Gilster trucks wherever they are. I guess since I know where their place is and all that. I've seen them run all over. About 2 weeks ago I was in McAllen, TX and saw one of their trucks! Talk about getting out of the midwest. Glad to hear they are a decent place to work.

Oh, we get out of the Midwest all right! We run all 48 and all of Canada. Talked to one of our old time guys and he said he has even delivered as far as PEI up there!
They are a good company. They let you be a truck driver. No QC to worry about, no routing, when to fuel, where to fuel, etc.
They give you a LARGE amount of independence and expect you to get it there on time and safe.

Well
I work for them , I have found them scattered all around they have growing problems, but everything is done old school, by the phone, no qual com no satelite no nagging no nothing, they give you a load and dont want to hear from you unless you are broke down ir late with your freight, I have found them very accomodating and very generous to me. but they want TEAMS so dont apply for a job there unless you have someone to TEAM with
